Hello all,

I’m currently a senior biomedical engineering student at Cal Poly, SLO. Graduation is close and I have a few choices to make. I’ve heard quite often that an M.S. in BME is pretty important to land a decent job in the field. I have a good chance at getting into my school’s accelerated 4+1 program where you receive a B.S. and M.S. in BME in five years. The problem is, I’m not sure if I’d rather wait and get an M.B.A. later on or how difficult it would be to get along in the job field without the M.S. in BME. Any help would be appreciated. I really hope that made sense. It’s a bit of a mess of words.

If you can find funding for M.S. i’d say go for it, M.S. will result in a higher starting salary and help land a dream job.

Without funding though…typically people close to graduation will apply for both jobs and grad school…if they don’t land the job they’re looking for then they go to grad school…makes sense?

The reason I bring up funding is that a it’s good idea to get an R.A. and do research…If your going to commit the time to getting a M.S. you might as well get paid and do the research experience while your at…that way if you ever decide to do a ph.D or want to switch from industry to academia you will have the credentials

just my two cents : )

Yeah, that makes sense.

The problem is, I have to apply for the accelerated B.S. + M.S. program while I’m still obtaining my B.S. This forces me to kind of make the decision within the next two months.

Nearly every school has their primary hiring period in Fall (September to December). If you’re a senior, you should have already gone through the hiring process and should have your job offers on the table.

Does Cal Poly SLO push all hiring to the Spring?

We have recruiters every quarter from specific companies. I just didn’t have the time to check out the job fair this past quarter due to classes and work.

I would find the time. The most companies hire in September, so there’s a good chance you missed the majority of opportunities Spring is mostly for companies that didn’t meet their quota, found funding for a new hire, or that had someone recently quit. Also, many companies split such that they hire full-times in the Fall and interns/Co-ops in the Spring.
