BA in drama

<p>My D is a HS soph beginning her search for a school where she can get both a great liberal arts education with a challenging major in drama. Columbia, clearly, is one of the great academic institutions. But how is the drama program?</p>

<p>I believe the theater department is at Barnard. Columbia students can participate in productions, and there is a graduate masters in fine arts program, but I do not think she can get a BA in drama at Columbia. She might look at Barnard. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong.)</p>

Just found it!! You can major in drama as a Columbia student, though the courses are at Barnard.

The Columbia College major in drama and theatre arts, a joint program with Barnard's Theater Department, teaches students to create and interpret drama and theatre in the context of a liberal arts curriculum. Through workshops, labs, seminars, lectures, and productions in the Minor Latham Playhouse, students participate in every aspect of performance, from acting to design and from directing to playwriting, while also learning the history and theory of drama and theater. Whether through participation in large departmental productions or through small seminars and workshops, the major offers many ways of learning and understanding the various languages of the theater--verbal, scenic, musical, and physical--as well as diverse theater styles and traditions ranging from Shakespeare and Chinese opera to commedia dell'arte, stage realism, expressionism, and the avant-garde. Fostering both creative and analytic thought, the program situates itself in dialogue with the study of languages and literatures as well as with the other arts. For this reason, students are encouraged to supplement their coursework in drama and theatre with courses in other departments, such as literature, art history, music, philosophy, and anthropology.

<p>Yeah, i didn’t know why you couldnt find it, lol, its right in the list of majors. Also, I don’t think the program is at Barnard, its with Barnard (hence the joint program).</p>

<p>Yup, found it in the list of majors. Before, I was looking in the list of departments and Columbia’s theater department is in the Graduate School of Arts, and offers only an MFA or PhD, not a BA. And, I was looking at the bulletin of classes, and all the listed undergrad classes were BC (Barnard College.) I think it would be worthwhile to hear from Columbia students who are involved in theater how this all works. Any out there?</p>
