You’re correct. Having a BA isn’t going to be any more useful than a BFA when it comes to finding work as an actor. Having a BA, however, is more useful when securing a job in another field – even if that job is only temporary.

Much may depend on the BFA program, and maybe things have changed since I graduated from Boston University in 1977 – but my BFA is basically a conservatory degree. I hold 16 credits of liberal arts courses; the rest are in classes such as voice and speech, movement, rehearsal and performance, circus training, stage fighting, etc. Years ago, when I looked into getting a second degree, not one institution would accept my acting credits from BU. Not one! (All of them accepted the liberal arts courses.) Had I graduated with a BA instead, or a non-conservatory degree, this would not have happened.

Full Disclosure: My daughter wants to be an actor, even though she has seen the ups and downs of my life. She’s currently a rising sophomore in pursuit of her BA, appearing in plays and musicals on an extracurricular basis. When she graduates, she has my blessing to go into the acting field, as her BA will offer her more options than a BFA.
