My D is a strong student (a junior)in the humanities but less so in math and science and doesn’t test particularly well. Although she wants to go primarily the BFA route, (and we will let her audition for these programs) I am looking for more BA options for her. So far in that category we have:

Sarah Lawrence
Connecticut College
Bard
Muhlenberg

I like all these choices because for the most part the classes are small and taught seminar style and that seems to be the best way for her to learn. These all happen to be in the Northeastern part of the country, but she is open to other areas, although not inclined to go to south of Virginia. Any others I should be adding? Thanks.

I know you don’t want South but sometimes (no offense to those in Southern States), kids make an exception for Florida. Rollins College has a BA with a MT emphasis and is SAT Optional.

Did you look at Drew? It is also SAT optional.

There are also BA schools where the SAT bar is not that high…Wagner, Indiana, and Temple, for example.

Have you looked at Santa Clara…offers a MT emphasis.

Manhattanville College has a BA in Music with a MT concentration, which is by audition (likely not overly selective) and the SAT bar is low.

Marymount Manhattan is a BA by audition (so artistically selective) but the SAT bar is low.

While Conn College is SAT optional, it is quite selective.

Hofstra is SAT optional and has a BA with a BFA option in Acting after two years, but is not a MT Program per se.

There are some schools that are not for MT but have good theater and perhaps some MT opportunities that are SAT optional such as Goucher, Wheaton (MA), and Dickinson.

It is hard to gauge what range of SAT you mean but American has a BA by audition MT Program…not sure if your child’s SATs are in range for that school but it is worth a look.

I would also like to add if she doesn’t test well, be sure to have her take both the SAT and the ACT, as some students (my d for example) do much much better on one of the test versus the other.

KatMT, I’m looking at both straight and musical theatre, not sure which she’ll do. She sings well and reads music and dances a bit, but I’d say she’s more of an actress who also sings and can move well than a musician/singer and/or dancer who also acts. Thanks for the suggestions. I didn’t know about Santa Clara. And as far as trying both tests, yes, she took a diagnostic and since there was a huge disparity between her ACT and SAT practice tests (she did way better on the ACT) she will only prep for that. I’m looking more for SAT optional places than ones where the SAT bar is low. We are hoping she will score high enough so that Tisch, at least academically, will be an option. As I said, her grades are very good and on the humanities side she is taking a rigorous load. I will also look into many of your suggestions, SoozieVt–as always, very helpful!
