<p>I’m helping a new 21-year-old mom (a dear friend) who just had her baby yesterday and came home today. Baby weighs 6 lbs. and all the clothes she has are way too big. I volunteered to find her something smaller tomorrow. </p>
<p>I have Babies R Us and Target in driving distance. Does anyone know if they have preemie size or smaller newborn size?</p>
<p>I ordered two larger preemie size sleeper suits on line (5-8 lbs.) but won’t be here for a couple of days.</p>
<p>Any advice from moms who had small babies? Are gowns better for the small baby? Maybe shirts and pants and roll up the sleeves and legs? My D was 9 and a half pounds and I could barely squeeze her into her newborn outfit for the trip home from the hospital, so this is new to me.</p>
<p>One of my babes was a 5 pounder. I would suggest getting newborn size. Babies grow quickly and these might be a tad large now but will fit soon enough. If you have a baby consignment store near you, check that out. Many folks bring unworn newborn clothes to these places because their babies are too big to wear them or because they got too many and the babies didn’t get a chance to wear them.</p>
<p>Kolhs is another great place. Look on their clearance racks. Sometimes it feels like they are giving the clothes away.</p>
<p>Thank you for the suggestions. I didn’t think of Kohl’s or Gymboree. I can get to both of those in the next week. This is a first baby and first grandchild on one size, so she wants the little girl to look nice, not like she is swimming in her clothes.</p>
<p>I had a premie decades ago and understand how large even the smallest clothes can be. But babies grow so fast I wouldn’t spend a lot on those newborn sizes. Quantity, not quality, is needed for all of those messes- only 2 or 3 nice outfits for showing off.</p>
<p>Get a few of those nighties with the elastic at the bottom. Those shouldn’t be as size dependent and they make changing a lot easier w/o all the snaps - especially at night.</p>
<p>In case people have forgotten, try not to buy anything which would require to go over a baby’s head, best to get clothe which opens in the front. 6 lb really isn’t that small, that is average, so I would think 0-3 month size should fit the baby. My kids were 8.5 lb, they were in 3-6 month size from day one.</p>
<p>I had a premie and she didn’t weigh four lbs when she came home from the hospital at 8 weeks old. I think premie clothes would be too small in a week for a six lb baby.
Newborn or 0-6 month size should be plenty small.</p>
<p>Resale clothes are nice because they are softer from prewashing.</p>
<p>I was a premie and wore cabbage patch kids clothes… with that random thought out, sometimes the hospital gift store has something (although expensive).</p>
<p>Target has a good selection of preemie and newborn sizes-my D was only 6 lbs. and wore newborn, but our niece was a true preemie at 4 lbs and we found lots at Target as well as Babies R Us. Also, the second-hand stores are a goldmine of gently-used baby clothes in all sizes. They outgrow things so quick and people donate in huge numbers.</p>
<p>That said, as a friend, maybe your best help could be in the form of making sure this young mom has the support she needs to succeed as a mom-maybe you could offer babysitting while she goes to parenting classes or takes academic or vocational classes, or cook some meals for her-things like that. The young moms I’ve known get tons of donations for STUFF, but it’s the intangibles where they need the most help.</p>
<p>Really? Six pounds is preemie size?? Since when? My guys were 5’ 14 oz and 6’ 7 oz.</p>
<p>The baby will be much bigger in only two weeks. As an “experienced mom,” I wouldn’t waste my money on more than one or two outfits for the photos. Other than that, a diaper and an undershirt is the way to go.</p>
<p>Isn’t it warm enough you don’t have to worry too much about clothes? I’d buy some T-shirts that the baby can wear for the next several months. They’ll be long now–really no need for bottoms. (Babies are really cute in T-shirts that come down to their knees/ankles!)</p>
<p>My five pound daughter got 24 (not a misprint) darling little sunsuits/sundresses with hats…all newborn size. We took TWELVE of them back and bought her a snowsuit. Seriously, she didn’t even wear the 12 we kept. She was out of that size in three weeks.</p>
<p>They make Onesies (or similar things…teeshirts with snaps at the bottom) in many darling little colors and prints. It’s summer…get two little outfits and a TON Of Onesies.</p>
<p>Ross, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Marshalls all carry infant clothes, HUGE selection at much cheaper prices than the department stores. Newborn and preemie sizes. Layettes, blankets, gowns, onesies, dresses…</p>
<p>Their clearance prices are even better, best time to pick up bigger sizes especially for the more pricier items. After Christmas they had snow suits, heavy weight coats both parkas and wool coats infant, toddler, boy and girl sizes for $5. The brands were not walmart or target, rather ralph lauren, north face, spyder, penelope,osh kosh, carter’s…</p>
<p>This is where I pick up my baby shower and baby gifts, clearance items can be as low as $2 and $3, often cheaper than the thrift stores… 1 item for when they are first born and then other sizes corresponding to the season. Also always try to include a book or two.</p>
