Bach of General Studies for Law?

I’m just finishing my soph year @ the Univ of Michigan. I was wondering if I would be looked down upon by adcoms from the cream of the crop law schools if I choose to go for this degree. My advisors swear they won’t, but I can’t find any substatial info or stats to validate them.

I have a 3.89 gpa (and, trust me, there’s no GPA inflation here) and I’ve taken a sit down practice LSAT @ a practice center (fierce sibling rivalry with my brother going on while he was prepping for his LSAT-don’t ask) and got a 167 (without any practice I think I could do better with Kaplan or at least studying practice exams and books before hand but I’ve always done well on standard tests - 33 ACT and 1540 SAT taking them “cold”).

I really don’t like the idea of picking a major. I’ve actually really enjoyed picking only the classes I like, I learn from, and I think I can do well in. I’d really like to be able to continue doing this instead of being pegged into the narrow concentrations that lack any “wiggle room” at my enormous state school.

My ambition has been law school and only law school since I was young (long family tradition) so I’m not really worried about not being able to do “anything else” with my bach. degree. I just want to make sure I’m not torpedoing my chances at a top school in the process. I can still easily major in history or phil or anything else really. On the plus side with the GS degree I could drop my foreign language pursuits (IE the reason my gpa is 3.89 and not 4.00), but (unlike most people who take up this path) it wouldn’t be the primary reason I’m doing it.

Also, sorry for the poor spelling/editing/grammar. I simply can’t type on laptops.

come on now…someone has to know…something

I would just suggest picking a subject or two to major in but I don’t know enough about the Bachelor’s of General Studies degree. By the way, I think you have great stats for the T1 schools. If you tested the first time under normal LSAT conditions, after prep you can easily get into the 170s.

I think that you’re doing a great job!

I’m much of no help, for the most part that I’ve never heard of this General Studies degree, though it seems self explanatory. I would major into something, IMO, mostly because I’ve never heard of it.

From all my googling it seems a lot of Michigan BGS’s end up at Michigan Law School. There’s a Michigan BGS graduate working as a visiting prof @ HLS, and many working at lower-tier schools, as well. Not a bad start, but I just wish I had more info. You guys always seem to have the most so I figured I’d give you a shot. I just have to decide this all by Jan 3. My courses need to start moving toward a major or I need to declare BGS within the next few days or I’m going to be in college longer than 4 years, and that just seems pointless.

New question. General studies major with a 3.95+ GPA or history/phil major with 3.75? What gets my foot in the door?

edit: err I’m doing all my law school research over this winter break, and I just learned that A+ is 4.33 to law schools. I have quite a few A+'s, and I just calculated my gpa to be 4.09 right now. So rephrased: 4.05+ major in general studies or 3.85 in history/phil/soc/poli/anything really?

(sorry for double post this is supposed to be up there)

I’d graduate with a large amount of experience in a lot of areas. I’d probably have graduate level course credits in at least 2-4 subject areas. I’ve already gone through the tough “weeder” classes and gotten A’s (Econ weeders/Calculus). Those are, by all accounts, very difficult courses at Umich. I’d have more than an academic minors worth of experience in history/polisci/econ/phil and maybe soc. My course load has been and will be anything but easy and I think that will be apparent to anyone who reads my transcript. I just wanted to see if you guys knew if I would be looked over for applying as XXXX YYYY, BGS instead of XXXXX YYYYY, BA.
