I think it’s somebody’s April Fool’s joke that the media picked up a day late and are now reporting as fact. Here’s why: I Googled around, and nearly all of the reports are the same article repeated word-for-word, suggesting a single source that’s being spread around. Then I went to the web site for the Winchedon, Massachussetts McDonald’s in question. They have openings for cashiers, but no there’s no mention of a college degree.

Other reports, like the one in the Daily Mail, say the ad was posted on jobdiagnosis.com, but searching for McDonald’s cashier position there brings up a listing with no mention of a college degree.

So bottom line, there are a lot of Internet echo chamber reports claiming this is true, but there’s no evidence to support it. Coming a couple days after April 1, I suspect that’s where it started.

It was reported on our local NBC news program. I guess they really don’t fact check anymore. Plus I have always heard that they don’t want people with bachelor/master degrees since they will leave once they find a job suited for their level of education.

If you click through the Apply Now it takes you to mcstate.com which is a legit McDonalds hiring site. I filled in an application (fingers crossed) and it asks about education including college and military but there is nothing customized to this Winchendon job.

So its hard to tell. The Winchendon location could be requiring a bachelors degree. Or JobDiagnosis could have mistakenly tagged the listing. Either is still plausible.

McDonald’s says they didn’t post the ad on jobdiagnosis.com. Jobdiagnosis.com says they accidentally defaulted to a college degree in the posting, and fixed it as soon as they became aware of it. So it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke, but was a mistake.

Well, my understanding is that many rental car agents have college degrees. Am not positive if it is a job REQUIREMENT, but all those I have spoken with have indicated they DO have college degrees. My sister thought it was unusual that Enterprise advertises all its employees are college grads, but after engaging in conversation with several rental agents since, of those I inquired, they all had degrees as well, Hertz and other car rental agents.

I’m a 17 year old high school student who’s employed by McDonald’s, and I usually work the front register. Maybe certain locations vary? But it’s definitely not the norm if that’s the case. Also, this is my first job so I have no prior experience!

“Well, my understanding is that many rental car agents have college degrees” - I know a local Hertz agent that graduated with a Marketing major.

Heck, most of the clerical people I know and secretaries in HI all have college degrees. Some went to very prestigous Us and some less prestigous Us; they often work side by side. The people in our public health department mostly have masters degrees.
