Background checks

I am beginning to feel as though random background checks by schools would be a good way to crack down on the many students who are dishonest on their applications. The reason I bring this up is the growing number of students who I have met which have admitted to cheating on their applications to get in. Phony EC's, leaving off plagiarism and cheating on their records, Lying about jobs they have held. Do very many schools run background checks? I am strongly for it. Anyone have the stats on this? I feel as though parents may be able to relate, as their children are often more deserving, yet the cheaters take their children's spots. I don't believe the "that's life" mentality is appropriate here, what exactly is so "real world" about that, that certainly sends the wrong messages to the youngsters regarding appropriate moral and ethical values.
