I am going to be attending CAS this fall and (estimating) how much workload would I have? Do most girls carry tote bags or backpack? CAS doesn’t allow laptops (I think) so it shouldn’t be too much a worry… but since it is the city, tote bags are more recommended right?
-a lot of people said carrying a backpack would make you look like a tourist and a “freshman” does it really? (and yeah yeah the whole who cares what others think, just wanted to see the overall perspective.)

I personally believe that people should not be influenced by what other people tell them to do,especially on the internet. You obviously care too much about how you look. I don’t know what kind of person you are, but just be yourself and don’t care what the bitter hearts are going to say.

For the tote vs backpack discussion just do whatever feels right and don’t worry about how other people think about you cause you are definitely over thinking things. They are both advantages in fashion and utility for both so decide for yourself. If you are such an undecisive girl, just buy both.

I think you would find girls with tote bags and guys with backpacks. But if one had to carry heavy stuff like a laptop and books then, i am pretty sure even girls would carry those in a backpack as it just is more convenient and easy on the shoulders. Add to that, that you have to walk a lot in New York. That is what my D does.

In my experience, girls will typically start out with tote bags because they want to look fashionable and not touristy. But then they realize that textbooks and laptops are really heavy to support all on one shoulder, so they switch to backpacks. Some majors have larger and heavier textbooks than others so a tote bag won’t fit them. Yes, CAS classes allow and sometimes even encourage/require laptops. I’d recommend just investing in a good backpack from the get-go and forgetting the tote bag.

Backpacks can still be cute though. I see a lot of girls with small designer backpacks (Prada, Burberry, Kate Spade) instead of the more utilitarian Jansports if you want to be more fashion-forward (not that there’s anything wrong with Jansports either). You can find cute inexpensive ones at Target too, or VS Pink if you’re into girlier options. Try to look for something that doesn’t have colors that will leak. You’ll get rained on a lot and umbrellas won’t stop your backpack from getting wet, and you don’t want streaks of ink running down your bag and your clothes… I learned this lesson the hard way.

Also I’d keep it neutral to match more outfits, but that’s just my personal preference. Don’t worry about looking like a tourist or a freshman; plenty of girls wear things like this and it’s totally normal:

Don’t worry about what others think; use what you want! I used a tote bag last year and will continue to use it this year. It’s actually one from the NYU bookstore that I bought for ~$20 when I visited for the first time. I can fit all that I need.

However, I don’t carry my laptop with me. If you do decide to carry your laptop with you, a backpack might be better. They tend to fit more.

In conclusion, choose something practical and something that YOU like.
