Bad Class Rank, Good GPA?

Hi,

I have a really bad class rank (121 out of 206) but I have a weighted 3.9 GPA. My class rank was 53 out of 206 in my 10th grade year, but I went abroad in 11th grade for a year to New Zealand and although I was still in AP classes, on my official transcripts I could receive only a ‘P’ for passing or ‘F’ for failing which doesn’t count for class rank hence why it dropped so quickly.

(I am applying to the Fashion Institute of Technology for photography which is VERY competitive. 900 people applied last year and only 78 got in.) ……

….So, basically what I want to know is am I screwed? Will admissions throw my application out as soon as they see my class rank?

FIT looks for skill, artistry and potential – as demonstrated by your portfolio, first and foremost. To be frank, your class rank and GPA aren’t what will get you in or keep you out. FIT’s criteria is not the same as other more academically focused prograns.

You could have a mediocre GPA but if your portfolio shows sparks of genius, you’ll get in. Likewise, a 4.0 GPA student with a mediocre portfolio will be rejected.
