Bad Class Rank?

I rank 76 out of 804 students. (Yes, my school is pretty big.) I had all As last year except math- I had an 80.

This year the situation is the same, except I now currently have a 74 in math (Accelerated Integrated Geometry) and an 80 in science (Pre AP Chemistry). I have always studied for tests and quizzes in a quiet place with short breaks. I do all the extra credit my teachers give me. I do supplemental practice from my textbooks and online. I always come in early to ask for help; I even go during lunch sometimes. The only reason why I don’t have a tutor is because I can’t afford it. But nothing works, it seems- on Friday, I had a nervous breakdown after taking my math test and spent an hour and half in the counselor’s office.

I am freaking out because the most likely scenario seems to be me losing my class ranking and being knocked out of the top 10%. I am extremely upset also because this is a downward spiral for me- I was 108 out of 850~ kids in my freshman year as a whole. Will this significantly harm me in the college application process?

Some schools don’t even submit class ranks to colleges, so first check with your counselor if yours does. If it does, chances are colleges will see that and it might impact your application process, though not substantially (depending on which schools you’re looking at).

Remember, colleges will also look at the difficulty of your classes and your school as a whole when evaluating class rank (my school doesn’t do class ranks because kids with 3.9’s would only be in the top 20%ish). I would try to stay in the top 10% in your junior year if possible though. If you can’t afford a tutor, try looking for someone willing to volunteer! There are always upperclassmen who need service hours or maybe even a teacher who would be willing to recommend someone. Either way, as long as you get good grades overall, class rank shouldn’t affect your application too much. Good luck!

Thanks! I have had 3 APs, and I’m taking 7 more. I hope that helps with my app.
