I just got accepted to Middlebury and rejected from every other college I applied to so far (except state safety school) and the decisions I’m waiting on are extremely unlikely reaches. I just got my financial aid package back, and they’re giving my family virtually nothing. A grant of like $1,200, but we’ll have to pay $55k per year. We made just over $100k last year and next year it is expected to be less than $50k (we farm). They must have taken our assets (farm & equipment) into account which we can’t sell. I don’t know what to do, and I don’t see any way we can pay for this. what can I do?
I’ll tell you what most kids in this situation need to hear: go to the cheaper state school. I’m personally having trouble with this too because I got into an expensive private and a cheap state school. The state school would be a lot more affordable, even if it’s not exactly what I want. It sucks, but it’s just not smart to pay that much when you can’t afford it. You don’t want to stress your family out that much. If you’re smart enough to get into Middlebury, then you can be successful at any school as long as you embrace it.
Apart from appealing your award (and I have no idea if this ever works at Middlebury or if you have a solid basis to do so), it looks like your only alternative is to attend your safety, and thank goodness you were smart enough to have one.
the farm is an issue…it and its equipment are worth millions, likely. Yes, you can’t sell it, but it’s something that others don’t have.
curmudgeon’s D had a similar issue when she was applying. He has a ranch. She took a huge scholarship elsewhere, then went to Yale for med school.
Someone in your situation (if others are reading this) should not just apply to one safety. They should apply to 3+ safeties so that they still have a choice. Kids like you often just apply to one safety, and it’s often a school that they really don’t want to attend (so it’s not really a safety).
Thank you, and yeah I was expecting a few other acceptances (BU and BC) but I’m happy I got into one of my favorites. The safety (University of Minnesota) is giving zero money so it would still be expensive, though not as much. I would do just about anything to attend Middlebury over the U of M because my main focus of college was to get out into the world, and the U is just way too close to home. My parents said they’d find a way, and we’re working with the fin aid department as of now to explain our expenses. Thank you for your reply
