Bad First Quarter Grades

Hey all. So I applied ED to Duke University. My school doesn’t list senior first quarter grades, only courseload, but then I read that Duke requires first-quarter grades from all applicants. However, my grades right now aren’t the greatest (B+ in AP Calc AB and B- in AP Phys C mech). I was wondering how much Duke cares about these grades, and how that might impact my application.

Not sure you can get an answer on CC based on factual knowledge, but I know that many seniors share the same concern regarding their ED and EA applications. I hope that institutions show some commonsense and leniency since one “reasonably good” semester should not weigh down an entire high school career.

None of us works for Duke admissions. I imagine your first quarter grades will be one of many many factors considered in making an admissions decision.

If you get turned down and statistically you will, you’ll have no idea why.

All that said, best of luck.

Control what you can. No reason to let this get the best of you. Just be the best you that you can be.

The one thing I can confirm is that Duke absolutely requires the first quarter grades for ED even if your school doesn’t report them. My daughter’s school has no quarter grades, only semester. Her counselor had to pull in progress grades to create quarter grades. It was pretty messy as some of her teachers had not input grades and they had to coordinate with them on actually having something reasonable to send on. Best of luck to you!

Why would they ask for them if they don’t care very much about them?

I can’t answer how much your Q1 grades might impact your admission decision.

Anyhow, talk to your counselor to see how they handle this.

Some counselors will send updated grades obtained the day they submit. (My kids HS does this) The counselor does this by taking the current grade in Canvas (on the day they are creating the report, say in late November) and/or by talking to teachers. Because the timing of the grade request could be a month or even six weeks after Q1 grades were calculated, the most current grades could be better. Send those if that’s an option. Talk to your counselor.
