Bad First Semester on a Transfer App

I’m currently wrapping up the fall semester of my sophomore year, and am preparing to submit transfer applications to large film programs (UT Austin and Florida State are my two dream schools) for admission in fall of 2018.

While my grades have been strong over the past two semesters (3.64 in the spring, likely between 3.7 and 3.9 this semester), they come after the 2.2 I received last fall, before I realized that college was a very different animal than high school. I’m really concerned about the effect that first semester will have on how the schools I apply to view me as a student. Is this something they might understand and be sympathetic toward?

They see this stuff all the time. You have really pulled it up. they will care less about that bad semester, than they will about your overall GPA, good grades in courses related to your major, and your improving trend.

Be sure to include matches and safeties in your application list, not just reaches.
