SO how bad dose getting a d or an f in an English composition class look if you are applying for Math grad school do they even care I am doing well in my math courses and am taking graduate level math courses I just really hate writing

If you’re going into academia, writing will be a crucial part of your career. I’m sure you’ve heard about “publish or perish.” Writing allows you to share your work with the world. You might as well start seeing it as a valuable skill now or else risk the ire of your future thesis advisor. Start caring about what your professor is teaching you and the feedback you get.

As for whether the grade will affect your grad admissions, it’s impossible to tell. I take it that you’re a freshman, since most composition classes are required of first years. If so, you have 2 1/2 years to overcome that grade. (Grad schools don’t see senior year grades.)

Writing in english class is extremely different from writing a scientific paper. My experience with english class is that you learn nothing that will be of any use in a science related field, a scientific writing course may be useful. I wouldn’t worry about the grade too much unless you have to redo it because you received an F. Just make sure your math grades are high and that you participate in research.
