Bad Manners; the French are at it Again.

Miss France now complains about the victory of Leila Lopes of Angola at the Miss Universe Pageant. It seems that Mademoiselle can’t believe the victory is justified because Ms. Angola wore little make-up, often dressed in blue jeans while in Rio de Janiero, and generally was not as outgoing as as Mademoiselle desired. And, le femme is about to create an international incident by suggesting that Ms. Lopes won because Angola, like the host nation Brazil, is a former Portuguese colony. Really??? What sour grapes. LOL.

Wearing little make-up and in jeans often makes her like me! I’m glad she won.

Quelle horreur!

Speaking of bad manners, though, our own Serena Williams acted like a spoiled brat at the US Open. It’s not just the French.

The comment about the fact she had an advantage because Angola is a former Portuguese colony isn’t just sour grapes. I could not care less about these things, but the crowd did pull for her because when asked questions, which were in Portuguese, she understood them and answered them in Portuguese and the crowd understood her answers. Moreover, I think there were 3 judges–Connie Chung and two Brazilians.

The other contestants had to have the questions translated for them and then someone had to translate their answers. It’s just not the same thing. So, yes, speaking the language certainly gave her an advantage.

Of course, it would have been better if Miss France had just kept her mouth shut, but I don’t think what she said is so off base.

“le femme”? Bad grammars.

I couldn’t care less about Miss Universe or the pageant, but I’m rooting for anyone who wears blue jeans and little make-up :)

Connie Chung? Is this what she is doing in retirement?

I can’t believe an entire nation’s opinion just got sullied because of the comments of one, no doubt empty-headed, beauty queen.

Then again, I can’t believe anyone takes the opinion of any beauty queen seriously enough to start a thread. Slow night Lake Washington  ?

Katliamom, indeed it was a slow night. LOL.

I haven’t watched a beauty pageant in at least 20 years. I saw 'la femme’s" comments online [sorry, the only French language instruction I had was in 7th grade]. No bias here…I love Valrona chocolate (even though I believe the Belgian stuff is tastier). And French champagna isn’t bad either. Hah!!! Besides bad manners, the only real problem I have is with the French is with truffles. I don’t get the attraction!!! Anyway, back to the pageant. What’s Serena Williams got to do with it Greennblue? Was she a judge or something? :)

No, just an American acting badly…does that reflect on America?

Serena argued with the judge re a call. Originally the tv announcers also thought the judge was wrong but after researching it they agreed that the right call was made. During the award ceremony, instead of being gracious and just saying that her opponent played better on that day, Serena had to bring up the disputed call and blame the judge for the lost point.

Somehow this thread reminds me of something else … tapping fingers, trying to remember … oh, right. Just needs a little rewording:

“Applicant X now complains about the victory of Applicant Y at the Ivy Admissions Race. It seems that Applicant X can’t believe the admission of Applicant Y is justified because Appicant Y was lacking in A and B and also in C where Appicant X clearly excelled. And Applicant X is about to create a College Confidential incident by suggesting that Applicant Y won acceptance to an Ivy because of some quality not related to merit. Really??? What sour grapes. LOL.”

Thanks Illyria for sharing a fine sense of humor and thanks for for demonstrating a knowledge of the meaning of parody. Wish more folks could appreciate that this thread needn’t rise to the level of Adlai Stevenson and Kruschev banging his shoe. Er…maybe I should rephrase that.

Jonri’s comment was interesting, esp. for all those kids who want to skip a foreign language and fall back on “everyone speaks English”.
