I wonder how this will affect future admissions cycles.

lol I love The Onion. Yeah too bad volunteering isnt a worth while EC to do anyways. Seriously, everyone does it so volunteering has lost its luster over the years. Just my 32 cent and a penny.

As usual, the Onion is hilarious, while at the same time exposing how scarily accurate it is.

" too bad volunteering isnt a worth while EC to do anyways."

Not true. Volunteering can be one of the most impressive ECs if one has done more than volunteer to pad one’s resume. Students who have been consistent , hardworking volunteers at places that they truly care about acquire skills – job skills, academic skills, people skills - that will serve them well for a lifetime, and also make a big impact whether that’s on one person whom they have been tutoring for a while or on an organization that they have assisted.

The kind of volunteers whom I am describing aren’t the students who sit around and do nothing unless someone stands over them and tells them what to do to help. These are students who care enough to pitch in and help however they can. For instance, I know a student who was volunteering with the library and on her own created a new web site for the library because theirs was out of date, and no one on staff had the skills or time to improve it.

I also know students who volunteered to do conflict resolution workshops for other youths, and the student volunteers enhanced their own teaching and other people-related skills, and eventually got part time jobs with the agency. One even got a scholarship related to his volunteer work. The students, however, weren’t volunteering to get things for themselves, but due to their volunteering, they got things anyway.

I myself recently got a job offer that was directly related to things that I have done as a volunteer. I was not looking for a job, but people sought me out to offer me a job.

And the Onion does it again. Hilarious and dead-on as usual.

Awesome article. Also, the guy in the picture is a friend of mine, pretty cool stuff.

Hey how is this funny!! Is it because fortunate kids are complaining about not having EC’s while others are homeless??

It’s called satire. Read more.
