I’m in the process of applying to some UCs, and I’ve been getting more and more nervous by the day. My GPA is fine (3.8uw/ 4.2w), but I’m coming to the realization that I can’t really improve my terrible SAT and ACT scores. I’ve taken the SAT twice, and my score actually went down from a 1780 to a 1720. I thought I would nail the ACT to make up for it, but I took the ACT for the first time yesterday and I already know that I did horribly on it. Can writing absolutely killer application essays make up for my scores?
My essays would be on these topics:
-My sister is deaf and has CP, so I’ll be writing an essay on my experiences with her and with deaf culture in general.
-Reflection on my service trips to New Orleans (w/ youth group) and Nicaragua (w/ a student run non-profit)
If it matters, I’m mainly trying for UC Davis. Thank you!

If you are an in state student you might get into UC Davis. Generally speaking your bad SAT scores my hurt you a little, but colleges look at your highest score when considering you as a student.
Your experiences with your sister may set you apart from he rest in your essays though.
