i know im totally shooting for the stars here, but is there any chance for someone with 1990 to get in? everything else i have is pretty above average
thanks guys~

apply and see. this is America. anything is possible.

I think your “above average” stuff should probably stand out, A LOT and then it can balance out

Have you thought about taking some practice tests and retaking the SAT in January? I think it would greatly improve your chances. Good luck though.

Unless you are an athlete, URM, or development case, I would doubt this score would be in the range for admission.

You can absolutely get in with other gr8 stuff … half the ppl at CC give out generalized predictions based on what they hears and see…which is mostly incorrect and felt as a surprise when decisions are mailed…

to that they have coined the term ** Unpredictable admission chances **
The perception of ppl is not what gets u in but the perception of adcomm which i have agreed and come upon consensus different frm CCviews …

Don’t take what people on CC say so seriously because it mostly applies to themselves.

Those CC people can be considered as “omg the only good thing going for me are my 2400 SAT scores and my 4.0” kind of applicants whom colleges get tons of apps from.

Differerentiate yourself from the pack. Exhibit unique passion or an unusual quality about yourself that will catch the college’s interest.

If you listen to people say on CC, you’re conforming to the rest of the stats driven applicants and you will become less “unique, special” as a result of that.

Do what you “yourself” want to do, not what CC people tell you. Doing that does not set you apart from them.

Believe me, I have asian friends who do not resemble the stereotypical “I study all day for my SAT scores” asian applicants that HYPS get thousands of apps from. They have 1900 SATs but have differentiated themselves by having special or unique talents and they are being attracted/recruited by HYPS .

Dont be like everyone else. That only serves to decrease your chances.

Is my 1350 + 740 W (12 Essay) really considered all that “bad?”

All my other “stuff” is great!

I wish people wouldn’t obsess over SATs so much… a lot of wasted time from a talented person going into a stupid 3 hour test. Makes me sad. Also, all people really see are the “middle 50%” of each section on Collegeboard and USNews rankings; they think that adding Math and Verbal medians will get the middle 50% total. I actually read somewhere that only 46% of admits to Harvard (I know, not Yale but similar in stats) get above 1400. Yet, the rankings suggest otherwise to worrying parents and students (by adding the two middle scores, you get 1400-1580). Why? They throw out “special cases” (including URMs, athletic recruits, socioeconomically disadvantaged, legacies, internationals) to up their averages, thus increasing their ranking.

Just to uplift your spirits Victoria8128, an Ethiopian from my school last year got 1200-something on his SAT1, and still got a scholarship to MIT. His ec’s wern’t out of this world either. So don’t worry, and best of luck!

Thanks, you guys are great!!!
i think I’ll just treat this more as a $70 lottery ticket!!

lol great idea
