I’m enrolled in a full-time dual enrollment program (FGCU ACE).The program is completely free and even pays for textbooks, I can do everything a regular college student can do. I have been involve in research, I’m active with multiple clubs on campus, joined a student research journal’s editorial board. However, This entire semester has been a catastrophic disaster and my transcript now reflects that. Pardon if I’m too forthright and prolonging, but let me explain how much of a mess my life became.
For some background,My mother is from a small village in eastern Bolivia and most of our relative still reside there. It’s residents have served as untouched spectators to the progressive world for decades. The justice system is at best a symbol, and nothing more. The cows roam the unpaved streets, parrots fly over mud houses and land on the brick ones, and a school nursing station rivals the local hospital. We received a call form this forgotten spot on earth the day before my third Biology exam and my midterms. A neighbor had drowned his sorrows enough to feel like he was in Paris, got into a fist fight with my mom’s younger brother, then proceeded to getting his gun and followed him home. His eldest brother defended him until he no longer could, and when he fell the shooter took the liberty of finishing the fight. All of the sudden my mother was being told her two brother had been shot. She was sobbing for days and I was too. I could no longer care about anything else. In short, My uncles got shot and I missed 1/4 of my grade.
That had not been the first time in the semester I missed something of sorts. I had gone to visit my paternal grandmother before a major heart surgery and missed two weeks of class. The surgery was risky, and we feared that it would had been the last time we say her. She raised me for six years when my parents left me behind to move to the US, and she is like a mother to me.
Add my inability to arrive to every class because my mom drove me for half hour every morning, financial difficultly, and a freaking hurricane- I was glad I made out with a passing grade My college GPA this semester was a 2.3, I am a junior in HS and still have 3 more semesters waiting to be added. My HS GPA is a 3.8, 4.8 weight. I took a lot of AP classes and flvs classes during my freshman and sophomore year. My SAT score was a 1490 when I applied to the program( It’s selectively) , I still need to retake it. I will most like graduate in the top 5% of my class because each class is counted as equivalent to an IB or AP. My question is: Is applying out of state still worth a try? How would colleges see this? Will there eyes bleed and there stomach’s rumble with laughter at the sight of it ?(bare in mind there is an f in a 1 credit lab in there) Wesleyan, Barnard, and Colby where always my first choice, but now I feel like I don’t have a shot at them?
Any tips on how to explain a bad semester and also where and how to explain it would be very helpful. Next semester will be different, and my HS will keep going up as long as I’m in the program.
