Bad Year

So, I’ll be rather straight-forward with my situation.

GPA: 4.0
SAT: 2100
Subject Tests: 700 Physics / 650 Math II
ECs:
YMCA Y&G State Winner (1st place) 2 years in a row
CONA Outstanding Statesman (Nationals) 2 Years
FIRST Robotics Nationals Competitor (Won Two Regionals)
Webmaster for Robotics Team
Jazz Band 4 Years (Quad C 1st Place)
Marching Band 4 Years (Section Leader)

I applied to three Ivies - wait listed at one, rejected by two. Accepted at NYU, Hendrix, King’s College, and A&M.
My father lost his job this year, and my household income went from 200,000 to less than a quarter of what he had before.

Financial Aid was pretty much denied to me because of my previous income from the last tax return. And I need financial aid more than ever, now. It’s extremely unfortunate that this occurred as I’m having to pay for housing deposits and acceptances. I can’t even manage to scrounge up the measly $325.

Hendrix appears to be the only chance in hell, as they’re footing 23,000 of the 27,000 in scholarships.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do?
I’m certain my post is vague, but please excuse my lack of decency, as I’m not feeling very rational, nor too intelligible at the moment…

I am sorry to hear about your situation :frowning: I have a suggestion (although I’m not exactly sure about the details or how the hell it works) but apparently it’s cheaper to go to community college and go to a four- year university from there. it also doesn’t diminish your chances in the slightest as long as you work hard, and obtain the same, if not better stats, etc.

good luck

Have you told the schools of the change in your financial circumstances? There are times when they will adjust EFC.

I’ve contacted a few, and they’re trying to get back to me.
It appears that NYU is a far cry.
It makes me particularly sad because I wanted to be a Finance major, but perhaps the 55,000 a year really isn’t worth it after all.
I do appreciate the concern, though.

I’m really sorry about your situation! I think you’re doing the right thing by contacting financial aid offices and hoping for the best, and I can’t think of anything else better to do :(

but just in case, maybe look into some alternative options? if you need to save the money, you could either start in community college or take a gap year to save up as much as you can; i’m not sure about nyu but most colleges will let you defer for a year, so you can work for awhile and not have to worry about reapplying.

I really hope everything works out for you- good luck!! :)
