i’m thinking of getting a bag/backpack for college
how much stuff do people bring to class?
how big of a bag would i need?

The average collegiate backpack should be fine. I don’t know if you were on block or traditional schedule in HS but you will be carrying fewer books than w/ a traditional schedule because you will meet with fewer classes each day. You also may decide to drop by your room between classes to drop off one set of books and pick up another A luxury you may not have had in hs unless you boarded. A messenger bag w/ a padded compartment for a lap top may be a good idea if you plan to use your laptop to take notes etc.

How much stuff you bring is dependent on the class and your preferences. A studio art classis going to require you to schlep more stuff than an English lit class. So look at your schedule and see what you are likely to need. Math and Science textbooks are often need for homework and study only and therefore unneccessary in the classroom/lecture hall.

College students rarely bring their books to class. Just notebooks for note taking.

I only use a backpack if I have a lot of stuff to carry to class, and I if I have to carry my laptop (but I don’t use it to take notes on). it’s a jansport, pretty simple (has 2 pockets, a main compartment and a water bottle thing).

Mostly, I just use a tote bag. I only carry my pencil case and a notebook and a folder (that holds all of my loose papers). I don’t use binders anymore (not even if I print out the powerpoint lectures and bring them to class). Also a water bottle, snacks, wallet, keys, id card, cell phone…and that’s about it.

But depending on how your schedule is, if all of your classes are in a row, you’ll be carrying more things, especially food (since you’ll be starving)…but if you have time to go back to your dorm/apartment…you’ll carry less.

I just bought a bag online from apple and it was much larger then expected. I look like a turtle wearing it. Ha! Oh well, it’s a very nice bag. Haven’t registered for classes yet; maybe I will need it.

What about riding bikes with bags? I have a messenger bag that I wanted to bring, but isn’t it annoying riding a bike with it? (I don’t have a basket on my bike or anything).

If you find it difficult to ride your bike with a bag there are lots of bike shops in Davis that sell folding bike baskets.
