Bailing roommate

Hi all. I came up here not knowing anybody back in the fall, and I randomly got assigned with a roommate in the dorms (like any other college guy). Anyway, we’re really good friends now, and we had plans to live with each other next year…now here’s the problem. He wanted to be an RA, so he was taking the class and everything. I had some of my other friends who wanted to live together next year, so if my roommate got the RA spot, I would go live with them, but if he didn’t get the spot, it would be me and him. Well, he started to lean away from RAing, got sick of the dorms, and told me that he was 100% legit with living with me next year, and that he is a man of his word, blah blah. I took this as he said it, and told my other friends that it wasn’t gonna happen.

Two days later, my roommate tells me he wants to be an RA again. Now, I am in a pretty unwanted position. My other friends feel like I am flaking around them and beating around the bush, but in all honesty, it’s because of my current roommate. I don’t know what the hell to do. If he gets his RA spot, I’d probably be living with another random roommate next year, but if he doesn’t get the RA spot, I don’t really know if I want to live with him, cause he could always just flake out of it again. I have two choices, A) live with him if he doesn’t get he spot, or B) live with my other friend who isn’t really all that fun of a guy but he is still reliable, and won’t flake, you know?

Go with the reliable one. It sounds like that is what you want. You really don’t want any additional stress in your life. Also, it doesn’t really matter if the person “isn’t really all that fun of a guy” since you can make your own fun.

Thank you, any other input?

I say go with the group of friends who want you to live with them. If living with that group is no longer an option, go with the reliable guy.

You can’t wait around forever for this guy to make a decision about what to do. He’s stringing you along for his own convenience – if he’s an RA he’ll get his own room and he won’t need you, but just in case he needs you, he’s keeping you strung on. That’s not a cool position to be in at all. Just tell him since he can’t make up his mind, you had to find another roommate, and wish him luck in his quest to be an RA.
