I was wondering if there’s a college out there that has strong sciences/engineering programs but ALSO has a really big music, art, and drama scene. Academics are very important, (especially the sciences!) but I don’t want to go to a school that’s entirely made of one type of academically-driven person…
…If only we could chose the people and atmosphere from some chilled out, artsy/indie school and mix it with ivy or MIT academics.

Columbia (about 35-40% of undergrads are math, sci and engineering majors), Stanford, Berkeley, Yale-Harvard-Chicago to some extent (lean less towards eng, Chicago has no engineering), Princeton to some extent (leans more towards math, sci, eng),

Even a school like MIT isn’t composed of one type of person – although most students major in science and engineering, almost everybody does something on the side to blow off steam. About 60% of MIT undergrads are involved in music or the arts, mostly as extracurriculars.

So the difference between MIT and other schools is that few students are actually art and science majors, but many students are individually passionate about non-technical subjects.

Northwestern has top music, film, and theater programs. There are lots of quality shows throughout the academic year. Dolphin Show produces the nation’s largest student-run musical. Waa-Mu is another big-time show but entirely student written. Chemistry, industrial engineering & management sciences, material sciences are ranked in the top-10.
