Balancing a job with school

I’m going to be a freshman bio major at UMD in a few days (actually letters and sciences, switching to bio when I can), and I was wondering how difficult it would be to balance a job with school. I mean, where else would I get money to spend while on campus? I’m not one of those kids that can just get money from my parents whenever I need it. But I’m planning on going to veterinary or medical school, so my grades need to be as high as they can be. I also need to get internship/volunteering/shadowing/clinical experience. I also want to be able to participate in extracurricular activities at school like clubs and maybe intramurals. I’ve heard that it would be far more beneficial for med school to earn high grades than work a job. What if the job causes my grades to drop? Med/vet school is so competitive, just a few low grades could keep me from getting accepted. I don’t want to get screwed when it comes time to apply and not be able to get in because I had to earn some spending money as an undergrad.

There are a lot of desk jobs on campus where you simply sit at a desk, perhaps make a few phone calls, distribute packages, send a few emails, etc., and when you aren’t doing those few things, you’re free to do whatever while sitting at the desk. A lot of people study during these times, so it’s nice to get paid to study essentially.
