We’re thinking about a trip to the beach, but further south than our usual Outer Banks destination. Does anyone know if surf fishing is allowed from the beaches on Bald Head Island? Or are you required to fish from a pier? My H wants it all–surf, pier, and charter boat fishing. (I want peace, quiet, a bunch of good books, and a screened porch with a water view.)

I know this is a fairly specialized question for CC, but everyone here gives such good travel advice that I thought I’d give it a try.

You might give Kure Beach a look. We love it there, pier fishing, surf fishing, charter as well. Not touristy at all and great food abounds. Love it, can’t say enough good things.

PM anothercrazymom. She has a house there and is very generous with information.

Bald Head Island is fabulous! You can fish from the beach, bring your dog to the beach, have cocktails on the beach!!! The golf and tennis is great, sitting on the beach or the porch with a book is great. It is my hands down favorite place. We’ve been going their for almost 17 years and own a home on the Island. PM me with any specific questions.

I live in Kure Beach – not a well-known spot – so it’s odd to see it mentioned here!

It is very calm and relaxing here…like 1955. We have a sandy beach (just replenished), lots of home rentals on the water, and, because of our ordinances, we have no huge hotel/condos blocking access. Plenty of parking but you won’t need it because you can’t be more than half a dozen blocks from the sea. If you want more ‘life’, you can head up the road a couple miles and be in Carolina Beach which is more touristy with a happening boardwalk, etc. Ft. Fisher is just down the road with a great aquarium and a Civil War museum. If you want more history and foodie-food, go to Wilmington. But if you want the best pork chops you’ve ever eaten, go to Freddie’s by the boardwalk here in Kure.

Oh, Bald Head Island is nice too. No cars.

My aunt & uncle have lived on BHI for years and truly love it there. They also own another home there that they rent out. PM me if you would like the VRBO info.

Thanks. Now I can report to my H that I’ve gotten an answer from the most trusted travel source available!

Love Freddies! We drive down from RTP area just for the pork chops!

I just saw an episode of Kate Plus 8, where they were at Bald Head Island. Looked gorgeous! I immediately googled it and have it on the list of future jaunts. Let us know how your trip goes!

Bald Head Island is outstanding but if you want a less expensive option, also consider Sunset Beach, just a little farther south and almost at the NC/SC state line. Very quaint and quite family-oriented beach island (e.g. teens say it’s ‘so boring’). Also, about a 30-45 minute drive to Myrtle Beach if you want to take in some shows, shopping or good restaurants and less than that if you go to North Myrtle.

Lifelong NC resident…grew up in eastern NC where the OBX was an easy down and back day trip.
Besides the beaches already mentioned, we also love Holden Beach and North Topsail Beach. Both are more family oriented, slower pace beaches. The last house we rented in North Topsail had an ocean view from the front porch and a waterway view from the back. Great for bike riding too.

Oh Freddie’s in Kure Beach – I haven’t thought of that in years. Yum. And I loved walking out on the pier, or taking the ferry from Ft. Fisher or going through the aquarium. For such a (relatively) small population town I’m really surprised that there are several posters here from there.

^^^It’s a small Internet after all.
