Can someone confirm for me that I will be able to use my Bank of America card at an ATM in Germany to withdraw euros?

I haven’t been to Europe since the days of the traveler’s check, so I need some updating!

I am pretty sure that someone else will answer your question but I can ask my son when he gets back from his life guard class/test. When he was in Germany last summer, he used his prepaid debit card/credit card to withdraw from ATMs. One of his classmates had some temporary problems but that was his local bank’s fault; they had not hooked his savings account up properly to his ATM.

Yes, I was in Munich over the summer. Use Deutsche Bank ATMs, because BoA has an agreement so the ATM fee is waived. You’ll be charged 1% foreign-currency conversion fee.

Be sure and advise your bank that you will be traveling there (so that they don’t think the foreign transactions are fraud). Also ask for an extra card.

Thanks for the helpful replies!

Fiona, that is a very good tip – I will look out for the Deutsche Bank ATMs.

Oh, and I forgot to ask – does one need any kind of special PIN?

^^No, same PIN. I’ve never had any trouble using my BofA card in European ATMs.

D just returned from an extended trip using BofA card throughout Switzerland,Germany,Austria, italy.Inform the bank here you are travelling, they will confirm whether your PIN # needs adjusting and “unblock” any holds that may occur overseas w/o them having the proper info. There will be conversion fees even if you find the right banks to use for no ATM withdrawal fees.

Having used my BA ATM card in DBs in Germany three times in the last month, I can tell you there is no problem with PINs or authorizations or whatever. No ATM fees. I don’t even think there is a currency conversion fee. I just checked to be sure- we got the spot rate.

This Global ATM alliance works with other countries as well. BNP Paribas in France, ScotiaBank in Canada, Barclays in UK. Check wikipedia for updated countries and note it is the bank’s home country only- DB would not be free in Austria.

With a Fidelity brokerage debit card that is 1% and no ATM fee where the Global Alliance is not present, we never go near a currency exchange kiosk anymore.

Just got back from Italy and Switzerland. Used Wells Fargo ATM without any problem. I also have a Capital One Visa Card that I use for all my credit card purchases in Europe as it does not charge a conversion fee. Saved at least $200 by using this card.

Wow- thanks for this thread! I’ll be staying in Germany over this winter. I was certainly dreading that 5 dollars foreign ATM fee! Now I don’t have to worry :)
