Is there some way to show that a poster has been banned? Like maybe delete. “Registered user” from their profile? There are a couple of discussions going on in response to posters who I’m pretty sure have been given the boot. It seems silly for these responses to continue when the OP is long gone, and the responses are directed to the OP.
Hello there…we have tossed this idea around in the past, though there is concern that visibly marking members as banned could breed side discussions about moderation within that thread and others (i.e. “Ha…glad they finally took care of that obnoxious dude”). Yes, these visible markers could deter bad behavior, or they could actually promote it (as some individuals may view it as a badge of accomplishment).
I do understand your point about threads authored by banned members continuing to generate responses. I know you are a very active member of ours, so I wonder if you can ballpark the number of instances where you have seen this. Typically, if a member is banned much of their content will go with them. Also, in many cases, content that does remain and continues to generate activity could provide benefit to more than just the long gone OP.
Thanks for your input!
Isn’t it possible simply to say that someone is “no longer a registered user”? I’m sure I’ve seen something like that on other sites.
Actually…just delete “registered user” from the profile. Most folks won’t even notice!
I see on other forums “Banned” under the avatar of banned users, in the space where you would otherwise see “Junior Member” etc. Posts remain because they are part of a conversation and they don’t get removed because the member is banned. Now, individual posts by an offending poster might be removed if there is an issue with a particular post but it otherwise is fine to leave posts by banned members in threads.
There may be more sensitivity than there needs to be about worrying whether or not there will be conversations about a banned member. Those comments will die out very quickly and if a thread gets out of control, then you lock it.
@Lenitus, on a related note, there seems to also be excessive sensitivity about conversations about moderators. I was admonished once for asking who the moderators are and flagged with a warning. Please don’t ding me here either. I am curious about why that would have been offensive?
If there is moderator bashing or disrespect, I would understand admonishing someone or taking whatever disciplinary action is commensurate with the offense, but I don’t understand why the fact that moderators exist in and of itself is a topic that should be prohibited.I have been the lead moderator on an equally large international forum and it is actually helpful for folks to know which moderators oversee which sections of the forum. It is also helpful to clarify the role of moderators at times when members need that clarity so it is not forbidden to discuss the existence of moderators. I am curious about why it is forbidden here?
I’ve never understood this, either, other than the fact that conversations about mods could cause mods to get upset and quit? We used to be able to see who the mods were for a particular part of CC, and that info is no longer available (or else I don’t know where to find it). I understand that there were hardly any mods left (because of the frustration with the new CC interface), and that there are now new recruits. It would be helpful to know who the mods are!!
It’s pretty clear who the moderators are. It says “Super Moderator” right under their screen name on their avatar.
Yes, BUT (once again), one used to be able to see the area-specific mods listed at the bottom of that area. Can one still do this? For example, in Parent Cafe, the mods for that area are no longer listed on the bottom of the Parent Cafe mainpage.
No. One cannot still do this. Either they don’t want to highlight how many mods they’ve lost, or they don’t want the accountability.
Or perhaps that feature simply didn’t carry over to the new program. Several features didn’t make it to the new format, perhaps merely as a programming issue and not due to some nefarious decision to be less forthright.
We have new moderators now who are doing a great job.
If they’re doing a great job, then we should know who they are. I don’t get the secrecy.
Not true, according to the other Administrator, MaineLonghorn.
I’m a moderator, not an administrator!
It’s up to the person who bans a user, whether to eliminate all of their content.
New active moderators are fallenchemist and Erin’s Dad. Reports are all being acted on VERY quickly, even at odd hours of the night.
Please remember that the TOS apply on this thread, also.
