Congratulations @GAParent2017 ! That was fast delivery. By portal do you mean CoalitionApp?
@TimeUpJunior , yeah, on CoalitionApp’s Checklist.
Darling Daughter got one yesterday. Snail mail. Totally unexpected, so she hadn’t looked at the portal. Looked like an invitation — she made some comment about admitted-student-reception, then nearly fainted when she opened it.
Be proud of your daughter. Celebrate.Congrats.
May i know are you in state or oss.
Do you have to accept honors college invite in order to be nominated for BK scholarship?
Does anybody know if all invitations for Banneker Key have been sent?
@Laura11 - You may want to call them about the honors college invite concern that you have.
I got mine in the mail yesterday (in state) and there’s also a section on my UMD checklist on coalition. I’ve heard that it’s coming out in waves but I’m not entirely sure
In-state. Public school. She was direct-admitted to the engineering school.
I’d also love to know if all invitations have been sent. A few of my classmates who I thought I had a better chance than got invitations. Not sure what factors they use to determine the recipients.
@theguy1242 ask your guidance counselor. You would have needed strong recommendation from your school as compared to other students at your school. It is holistic.
"The University of Maryland seeks to identify and select some of the brightest high school seniors in the nation to continue their education as Banneker/Key Scholars…Factors such as a candidate’s involvement in community service, talents or skills, leadership, and character all play a part in the final awards. Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for more information. "
Well, my son’s guidance counsellor said to my son that he should expect one but he has gotten nothing
@Laura11 I am sympathetic.
Would be best to contact UMD directly.
I found another description
https://www.theunipedia.org/2019/10/umd-banneker-key-scholarship.html?m=1
"Scholarship Summary: The Banneker/Key Scholarship is the most prestigious merit scholarship offered to incoming UMD freshmen (US citizens and residents only). In selecting Banneker/Key Scholars, the selection committee seeks to identify potential academic leaders, who as individuals and as a group, will enrich and benefit from the campus learning environment.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria: There are no set criteria for eligibility but past recipients were in the top 10% of the applicant pool."
Really tough competition in the applicant pool. Not enough for a student to be in top ten percent of their own school.
Is anybody out of state student got the email for the nomination.?
or it is mostly meant for In state students? Is it coming on waves?
Still believing my daughter has strong chance.If she miss this what is the next merit aid she can get as an OOS., without merit aid it is
impossible to pay $52000 per year.
@Nitmom $12,500 President’s scholarship is possible.

@ HippoBirdy,
Thank you for the reply, let me hope the best.LOL
Just curious, what ACT or SAT scores do students that are receiving nominations/merit have?
@carrottopcurls2 - Maybe helpful the other way around as well… My daughter has not been invited (yet?); ACT: 36, SAT: 1580.
My daughter was not invited last year and she had 4.0 UW/4.9W with 6 AP classes and the rest Honors and a 1560 SAT. Only 400 of these invitations go out. It is a very tough get so I am very surprised that a student’s guidance counselor would tell them to expect one.
OOS? Assuming her ECs and class rank are similarly stellar, I would hope that she has a decent shot at the UMD Presidential scholarship.
