Does anyone when Presidential Scholarships are announced?
@adlgel she probably based it on her experience. Its Maryland school so she can compare to previous years. She knows my son’s stats etc. Oh well, stats do not matter much anymore unfortunately.
Has anybody received late this week (out of state) invite for the Banneker Key scholarship interview?
Also, do all UMD Honors students get some sort of scholarship?
Any guidance is most welcome.
I would say that most admitted UMD Honors students do NOT get some sort of scholarship
From a parent’s perspective, the B/K interview process was a pleasant day. My DD had hers this week. No problem finding parking at the Stamp if you showed up early. DD did a tour of her school, while husband and I waited at the Stamp. (Husband is an alum of the same school, but has limited mobility right now.) Nice buffet luncheon with speakers, then DD and I walked down to the B School for her interview. She thought the interview was painless, even pleasant. She and I then went over to the open house at Prince Frederick Hall (nice dorm!) and enjoyed some wonderful ice cream from the Ag School. After that, one of her high school buddies met up with us. Great day! I hope she gets the big one.
Does anyone know when results for full/partial ride will come out? I’m going crazy waiting with no apparent deadline.
2019, they released decisions on March 15. 2018, they released decisions on March 16. Those two dates were the Friday before UMD’s Spring Break. Today is the Friday before their 2020 Spring Break…
Of course, with the current situation, the results may be delayed. But, they’re planning on switching to online classes after Spring Break, so today seems like a good time to do it (and it matches precedent!).
Last year, the first report of a decision was around 5 PM EST.
The last interviews were March 4, I think. It would be wonderful to hear today, especially if it’s the full ride.
Everyone check your Coalition checklist, it’s out.
Just got an email too!
Do they ever increase a partial to a full after May 1? DD got a partial and committed to Maryland, but she knows a few people who got the full who held out for Ivy Day and are now going to other places. Boy, we would sure love it if she could get a full.
Not everyone who gets the full scholarship commits to Maryland. As a matter of fact, I think that 400 total BK scholarships are awarded and only about 150 end up enrolling. Perhaps the number will be higher this year because of the economy. Anyway, I think that the main purpose of the BK is to entice students who could be lured to more elite places. Once your daughter has committed, she can’t be lured!
@Mamatodogs Of course, many UMD applicants could be lured elsewhere. I think that the BK committee probably picks a mix of potential hotshots for each department and excellent students from each demographic group. Perhaps the interviews are used to discern intellectual curiosity? I don’t know what other criteria the BK committee uses, but it can seem somewhat random to those of us on the outside. I really think that the BK enrollment rate will be higher than usual this year. Best wishes to you and your DD.
@Mamatodogs Btw, I think that the BK competition is particularly intense in the popular majors. That’s my two cents. My DD went to the Humanities reception on her BK day and there were three students there.
Really agree that there’s some level of trying to lure B/K kids from more elite places. I was deciding between Berkeley and UMD but ended up coming to Maryland on a full ride. My interview wasn’t all that great either- when asked about what most excited me at UMD, I said studying abroad lol.
There’s a little reception during the freshman fall semester for B/K kids, and wow are there a ton of kids in Neurophys or Comp Sci or some other STEM major. I was the only Business undecided (to be fair, I switched out of Neurophys).
Update: Turned down BK full eventually for one of HYPS :(… tough tough tough decision for us, especially since full pay - income bracket just slightly above FA threshold…
