Agree that the powder form has been around forever.
I’m another big fan of BKF but switched from the powdered to the soft cleanser in the gold plastic bottle. It’s definitely more expensive but a) I think it smells better and b) it doesn’t clump up like the powdered version tends to do in my climate. I consider it a small indulgence worthy of a little extra.
Thanks for the tip! I did use the BKF on my shower glass today, and it did great! I only had the powdered kind, so that was what I used. I put some in a plastic container and then used the green (scouring) side of damp sponge to kind of make a paste as I smeared it on. Let it sit for a bit. I do think folks sometimes need to let products do their jobs by giving them time. Then I rinsed off/wiped down with the softer side of the sponge and squeegeed.
I will look for the “recipe” for the blue dawn and vinegar - I need to find something to clean our glass sliding doors.
@Hoggirl - it’s equal parts original blue Dawn and white vinegar mixed in a spray bottle. Some folks heat the vinegar first and others heat the complete mixture before putting in the bottle. I tried heating the vinegar but didn’t find it to make a difference.
I also use this solution in my sonic jewelry cleaner. But don’t use on anything soft like pearls.
Once shower doors are really clean, I have had really good luck treating them with EnduroShield from Home Depot. One treatment will last a few years and makes cleaning a breeze. Once treated, just spritz with 50% diluted vinegar and wipe dry.
Thank you, @ChaosParent23 and @Knowsstuff! And @scubasue, wow, I would never have thought to try steel wool on glass – I definitely would worry it would scratch it. If you try it, @Hoggirl, please report back.
CLR works but once really clean I use Wet and Forget for showers now and its great. Just wet it then the next day water it down. Works on tile and the glass very well and smells like Vanilla.
@GRITS80 - thanks! Definitely going to give the Dawn-vinegar mix a try. I guess that grade of steel wool could be purchased at a hardware store? Like ACE? I never knew steel wool was graded.
I know I’m getting a bit off topic but it is a cleaning question…I have flat river rock stone on my shower floor and whitish spots develop on it. I’ve tried a few different things with minimal success. Any suggestions? You all seem to know your cleaning products!!
Wow guys! Thanks to this thread, I picked up some Bar Keeper’s Friend powder to try on my hard water stained shower glass and I can say that I am so happy with how clear the glass got…so sparkling clean after trying SO many different products before this! I’m a convert! Thanks so much!
How did you use it? I guess as a sort of paste in order to be able to apply it to the glass?
I religiously squeegee the glass now. When we got it they told my husband it was treated and wouldn’t etch. But then I noticed very faint etching! Ugh. It’s honestly not even noticeable but I’d love to win! LOL.
Also @VaBluebird instead of squeegeeing the glass these have been a godsend! I find them so much easier to use than the squeegee! Thank you @artloversplus. I’ll give that brush a try. And I really appreciate all the suggestions for the glass shower doors that are spotted too. This thread is so helpful!
So, I had posted awhile back that I had had success cleaning my shower glass with a paste out of the BKF powder and water. I have one of those rolling doors on my shower/tub combo. I had only used the BKF powder on the fixed part of the glass. I was too lazy to clean both in one go, and that bathroom doesn’t get used anyway. So, today for comparison on the door that rolls, I used the Blue Dawn/Cleaning vinegar mix with the Grade 0000 steel wool
@scubasue - oh, my word!!! THANK YOU!! This was so much easier and less messy than the BKF and equally if not more effective. It definitely took less elbow grease - no effort at all!
I am really not a fan of cleaning, in general, but I think that may be because I have been frustrated to have worked hard to clean something but not really had success. THIS was definitely a success! Y’all need to try it if you have hard water spots!
My glass shower door has terrible spots. I’d say it’s basically covered in hard water film. I tried the bar keepers paste in a small section but I didn’t find it did much. It did work nicely on the stainless steel edge. I’ll need to get the steel wool and try that.
@artloversplus the powder BKF was out way before the cream. We have been using it for many many years.
For those of you who like BKF…try plain Baking Soda. It works pretty much the same way as BKF…and is way less costly. Sprinkle the baking soda on just like a cleanser…it really works, and it’s as abrasive.
@kethra - do you know how these cloths compare to the Norwex cloths? In terms of either quality or price? Has anyone used Norwex cloths? Sorry - I’m kind of getting off track from the BKF.
