Bard College vs. Oberlin College [Political Science, Philosophy]

Reading your previous posts, I thought your son loved Oberlin. Something change?

I concur.

Separately, it seems to me the whole activist culture at Oberlin is not really present right now. I don’t know why…maybe the confluence of a few things such as the Gibson lawsuit and all that went with that, Covid, and who knows what else. Just to take one example, there has not been much pushback, if any, from the students, faculty, or admin regarding the Ohio bathroom law, which really is a huge issue for some, especially trans students.

While it is a huge issue for trans students, the college students, faculty, and admin are effectively powerless to do anything about it, and trans students may now be actively avoiding colleges in states with bathroom laws and the like.

With all due respect, my daughter graduated in 2023 and this was not her (or our) experience, nor is it the current experience of my nephew who is now a student there. I do feel like this stereotype of the school is just continually perpetuated without current fact…

I also had a kid there within the last several years, so their lived experience is also current.

True, but that is often the case (or seemingly the case) for many activist undertakings.

Ha ha, try being a Washington and Lee University family – but we are stereotyped from the opposite end of the spectrum. Which is not accurate today either.

Thank you so much! This is incredibly helpful. I’m so glad that your daughter had a great time at Oberlin, and I really hope she’s doing amazing still!

She is! She had a job offer in NYC before she graduated and has been there ever since! She had a fully paid internship the summer before that in NYC, secured and fully funded (including travel, rent, living expenses, etc.) by Oberlin, which helped her land her current job. Amazing alumni network and funded internship programs!

This has decidedly not been the experience of my kid, who’s a first year at Oberlin.
