Bard, Pratt, Purchase (accepted as Creative Writing major)

Down to the wire comparing Bard (would want to moderate into Written Arts), Pratt (writing), and Purchase (accepted directly to Creative Writing major). 21 year old transfer student. Purchase would be approximately 15k more/year than Bard. No FA info yet from Pratt but 18k merit. Would love any thoughts about this. Eventually may want to do screen or playwriting. Strong interest in poetry.

Urban, suburban, rural.

Can you afford Purchase?

Where is their comfort level, that you can afford? You might also look at career outcomes for each - you can ask.

Good luck.

I’m not totally up to speed on writing programs, but iirc, Bard has a strong program with good faculty. Advising is good there, and students seem serious about their studies. That would be my choice.

Mine too. Isn’t Purchase more of a commuter school? I wouldn’t want to pay more for that experience. However, I know nothing about the creative writing programs.

Bard for the overall experience. Creative, artsy vibe. At least in my experience. And not too far from the city.

If the relative costs are not an issue, I also think that Bard is the best choice for creative writing.

Pratt has a stellar reputation in fields like design and Purchase is a top program for theatre arts. However, Bard has a better creative writing program than either.

That being said, Pratt does have a large and interesting creative writing department, so it would be my #2 recommendation. Unfortunately, Purchase’s creative writing program is pretty small, compared to the creative writing programs at the other two colleges.

Bard due to cost & campus culture/environment.

For MFA in poetry, consider the University of Mississippi.

For screenwriting, USC is the powerhouse school.

Based since it’s the strongest in your field of interest AND the cheapest to boot based on what you wrote.
Congratulations :tada: that’s a hard acceptance to get
