My daughter (a D&D player!) is currently a freshman at Kenyon. She was choosing at the end (with a couple of others) between Bennington, Sarah Lawrence, and Kenyon. She loved so many things about Sarah Lawrence, especially Bronxville and the proximity to NYC, but in the end wanted more depth in subject areas- Sarah Lawrence has every student in the same major. Few classes have prerequisites- In some ways it’s wonderful to get a rounded education. But, if you want to go deep into English classes or Biology classes or Film- you were going to be in classes with students who are beginners in the field. You never take that next step up the ladder in any one subject. My daughter chose Kenyon and could not be happier there! Quirky kids who are excited to learn in an absolutely gorgeous setting with welcoming professors. There are multiple examples of successful authors among Kenyon alumni.
Kenyon was my crush school during D22’s search. Such a special place, especially for a writer. The opportunity to intern for the Kenyon Review is a unique bonus, too. I’m sure Oberlin, Bard and the others are wonderful. But if you’re going to Oberlin, I agree with those who recommend you make time for Kenyon.
In news pertaining to Bard’s literary attributes, the school has arranged to acquire Lapham’s Quarterly.
This could have been written about my daughter’s experience in high school and at Kenyon. She majored in English with a creative writing concentration, and also completed a studio art minor. She researched and visited Bard and Oberlin as well. She liked both and felt she could see herself at either of them, but Kenyon was at another level for her. As others have suggested, I recommend that when you visit Oberlin you also make time to visit Kenyon.
