I applied for financial aid but did not qualify for it at most schools, does the fact that I even applied for it hurt my chances of getting off the waitlist?

I do not think that is safe to assume. No one knows why that email was sent, or why they might need contact info for some but not others.
I also don’t think it’s safe to assume that people who aplied for financial aid won’t get off the waitlist.
That said, the odds are bad for anyone trying to get off of any college’s waitlist, even in this weird year. It’s not impossible, as several people here have clearly shown, but now would be a good time to start thinking about your life at a different school, where people are already making connections, finding roommates, and prepipng for the coming 4 years. Lean in to the possibility of a different reality than the one you expected. If a call comes in and you get in to a school off of the waitlist, cross that bridge when you get to it. If there are 1600 young ladies on the waitlist and 50 waitlist spots that will open up, the odds are still pretty slim.
Do you have a back up school where you’ve put in a deposit by May 1?
@dinosaurgeek23 I feel the same way too. To be fair, they did say that they were need-aware on the waitlist FAQ, and we can’t blame them for that. It’s still early to tell, but I’m going to stop holding out for them. That way, it would be less painful when the waitlist closing email comes.
I’m an international student and as I said before I received an email yesterday. I replied this morning about my availability and received a zoom call just now. I got in!!!

No, I didn’t. I received an email from them asking for my contact information and availability yesterday, and they called me today.
Has anyone asked when the waitlist is likely to close? Alternatively- can anyone offer advice as to whether to ask?
I think just an email to your AO or phone call along the lines of asking about any WL updates might be sufficient? then if it is closed they’ll most likely say so?
