Barrett EA Decisions for Fall 2020 Admission

This is such an interesting thread! My OOS D has been accepted to both schools (and Honor’s Colleges) but the difference in merit money is significant!!! ASU will cost us $17,500 more per year, as she only got the $15,500 merit award. At UA she received full tuition, plus an additional $1,000 for the first year. Of course she likes ASU better, because Barrett is simply far more impressive. She just about swooned when the tour guide showed her the Vista del Sol apartments! She is a business major, and both schools are ranked the same according to US News, so that’s not a factor. She has applied for additional scholarship money through Barrett and Carey, but unless ASU can show her the money it’s hard to justify the additional cost. She has also received a full tuition scholarship at the University of Miami, so ASU needs to step it up if it wants to keep these top tier students. Does anyone know if they scholarship match?

That is a good question about the scholarship match, although I would guess it’s very unlikely that they would do that or could afford to do that.
As I mentioned before, ASU kind of slid down our list because it was one of the weaker offers we have received. If my son really has a serious interest in attending there I’ll probably pick up the phone and just ask the question about addition merit money…although I am expecting nothing. We have many schools that are $10k or more less than ASU. And if we’re going to spend $35K for ASU we might as well just spend $41K for Purdue and the top 10 engineering school and everything that goes along with it.

Hi all, anyone coming to the Scholars Summit (overnight) on President’s Day weekend and/or anyone have any insight? DD is accepted at Barrett, has the OOS Pres scholarship and has applied to the general & one special scholarship. Waiting to see if she gets more $. She’s on the pre-med track.

@2020CPMom - is your DD in the running for NMF? If so, that will increase the $$. NMF covers 100% of tuition. You pay room and board, for my DS this is about $12k per year after taking the subsidized Fed Loans. I always recommend a visit. The Scholars Summit will have some fun extras probably.

@2015vintagemars - The process of housing selection seems to change every year. I am on year 6 with a child at Barrett. First one graduated in '18, the second is a sophomore. Hopefully the selection will be similar to last year’s. When the window opens, students will see all the rooms, by type, that are available. If a student has selected a shared single (2 singles with a common bathroom). you have the ability to see that student’s profile and message them. We thought a single was best for DS #2. I’m still mixed about that. He ended up isolating himself and fighting homesickness issues. Not sure if it was the other suite-mate or the single room. He is doing much better this year in Vista. Yes, Vista is great! He is in a 4 single apartment.

I am not sure a rush to accept and pay deposit may not be warranted if they will tell you when freshman housing selection will open. That is when you want to be in the queue. A Barrett advisor or a call to housing may provide that information. You have until May 3rd to cancel a housing selection with no charge (according to 2019-2020 ASU housing contract).

@usma87 - thank you so much for the info!

Thank you! She’s not in the running for NMF, for some reason she didn’t do as well the second time on the PSAT although her first attempt was in the 99th percentile. She has solid stats, however, so it seems the are treating her as such: 4.85/4.35 gpa; 1500 SAT; 7 AP’s & test scores or mostly 5s (one 4 I think), and is a first gen student. She’s pre-med and we are waiting for the UC’s, but she is recently weighing UC vs. private or honors for a different experience. If anyone had any experience/thoughts with the UC vs. private/smaller honors programs for pre-med, we’d love to know! It may come down to $ as we don’t qualify for fin. aid, but have basically enough in college funds for undergrad (depending where she goes/merit of course!), but she’s on her own for med school.

Good luck to everyone with decisions and merit, and thanks for sharing!

I just wanted to share that it seems freshmen housing selection is open. At least at Poly campus, and not Barrett. My apologies, I am new to the forum, and although my DD would not be in Barrett, I read all the posts trying to learn about ASU.
