baruch scholars- landing internship? HELP

hey so ive been accepted into baruch scholars and i want to major in finance with a minor in accounting and marketing. What kinds of clubs and organizations should I join? How should I demonstrate leadership to get a goldman sachs or a high profile internship in my freshman yr or sophomore yr at most ?

From what you’ve said, I’m assuming that you haven’t even started your Freshman year yet. I suppose that it’s great that you’re thinking about this right now, but every school has different clubs. You should probably wait to find out what clubs your school has and join the ones that interest you/you think will help with your major.

On the other hand, it’s very likely that you’ll end up changing your major, especially if you really are not yet a freshman.

DECA might be a good club for you though, if your school has it. It’s a business club.

I currently go to Baruch and I held several leadership roles in several organizations, so I might be able to help you out. First of all, you must have a liberal arts minor, but you can have a business subject as your second minor. Accounting is not offered as a minor at the school, but you need to take 2 accounting courses as a requirement and can take two more higher accounting courses for your finance elective, so that’s sort of like a minor.

Second, the clubs. It is very good that you are thinking about this now. My advice is to get involved asap. There are several clubs, including clubs for your major. There is the Finance and Economics Society, Investment Management Group, Wall Street Club, and really great business fraternities. Outside your major, I suggest you join student govt and there are also well-established honor societies. It’s a great way to meet other club leaders and network. After your freshman year, try applying or running for leadership positions in these organizations, but don’t join too many. Remember, your classes come first!

Third, I know several students who were able to get amazing internships (front office, midofficer, back office) and Goldman, Citi, MS, JPMorgan (the biggest recruiter), etc, and yes, they had excellent grades, but a lot of them were also involved at Baruch. I would also suggest to look for internships/parttime jobs on Baruch’s starr search (you’ll learn about it during your convocation day in August).

Fourth, if you have not gone to orientation yet, I suggest you sign up for an LC (Learning Communtiy) block. They’ll explain it at orientation.
