S2 has decided to join the baseball team, despite not being able to play! His only experience is t-ball many years ago. I need to get him a glove, cleats, and baseball pants. Any recommendations for brands or sources? I like to shop online whenever possible. I realize that I will have to take him shopping for cleats in person.

One stop shopping for baseball stuff: Go to Modells or Sports Authority. You can find everything you need there. He’ll also need a cup. He may want batting gloves. Depending on where you live, he may need an Under Armor mock turtleneck for warmth to get him through the cool start of the season.

Take your time picking out a glove. Make sure he can squeeze it open and closed. Don’t buy it big thinking he’s going to grow into it. He’ll need to “break it in” which does take time.
Buy an official baseball to he can wrap it into the glove to form a nice pocket. Oh–don’t forget glove oil or foam for the new mitt. Don’t go super cheap with the glove–you do not want a plastic glove.

Skip both Modell’s and Sports Authority, go to Dick’s Sporting Goods, selection and knowledge are significantly better then the aforementioned, and join the rewards club they have, you’ll receive rebates on your purchases…they also have a very good online store…

Just don’t google ‘Dick’s’, you might not like the results. ;)

Thank you, nysmile and qdogpa, for the good advice. We have all 3 stores that were mentioned nearby. I’ll try Dick’s first.

Also, if he plays soccer, you can use those type cleats for both sports…baseball cleats are not allowed for soccer…

Thanks, qdogpa, but he doesn’t have soccer cleats, either.

My boys have Nike cleats - they seem to be a little more comfortable than other brands. Find out if he can wear metal cleats - some fields only allow plastic.

You should also buy a glove conditioning kit to help speed up the break-in process. Follow the directions on the kit - my H says breaking in the glove is highly important.

If he will be doing a lot of sliding, get him the Under Armour long compression underwear with the padding on the upper leg & hip area. Otherwise get him some compression shorts to wear under his workout gear. (this is more for guys who wear boxers - i think whitey tidies hold “it” close to the body while running) :p

Don’t forget the sunglasses - of course Oakleys would be the first choice! Just make sure they block the glare, won’t shatter upon impact and look good upside done on his hat brim. I miss being a baseball mom!

Now we know only the last part is important! ;)

Like online shopping? Check out baseballexp.com Their company started out as a specialist in baseball equipment and has slowly expanded to include more sports. But they are top-notch for baseball… And reasonably priced…

Will the school supply a full uniform (shirt and pants) for games? If so, why does he need baseball pants, just for practice? (Is he guaranteed to make the team? :)) I agree that if there is a Dick’s sporting goods within a reasonable distance, get some help there.

I’ve shopped at both Modells and the competition. Most sports megastores are good for the basic equipment. Modell has good prices and the others have a great selection. Hopefully the megastores will have your items discounted. As for cleats, try some on at the bricks and motar stores and then go online to Eastbay.com, a great resource with good and at times even great prices! Most of the stores will match a competitor’s price if you bring the ad with you. Also, your local neighborhood mom and pop sporting goods store may have some unsold bargain basement equipment from ‘last year.’

How old is this ds2?

I like eastbay.com too and I will say when you get to needing to buy the bat, make sure you know all the regulations for your area and the leagues he’ll be playing in since it can vary across the board but having his own bat will likely become important and there is a large range of what is out there and are not always inexpensive!

This S2 is 13, and he is guaranteed to make the team (small school, they have trouble finding enough players). I’m furiously taking notes… thanks, all!

If you get him a gear bag. Try to get one that has a ventilated area for shoes (smelly and muddy) and a separate zippered pocket for wallet/cell phone.

So this is the school team? I’d find out how much the school provides. No need to invest in a bat if the school will. And who knows if he’ll stick with it. Does he know what position he’ll play? There are different gloves for different positions.

I got the list from the coach. As far as position, I imagine that he will get little playing time, and that when he does play he’ll be in right field. Isn’t that where they put the kids who don’t have good skills? I remember the Peter, Paul and Mary song:
