<p>May I know what view do you people have regarding PhD in basic science and PhD in applied science? I am from Singapore and it seems that the government here is now cutting funding on basic science and moving on to industry (applied science) whereby they can reap the economic benefits. And Singapore being a very small country has foreign PhD students/postdocs/scientists from all over the world, its a sorta getting saturated.</p>
<p>If I do not proposition myself well for the next few years, I might find myself out of a job soon even when I have gotten a PhD. And also, salary in academis science is notoriously low compared to the industry. One of the scientists got a $5 raise after a year.</p>
<p>Or should I just enrol in a high tier school and try my best to crank out a high impact journal and then move on to applied life science industry instead?</p>
