Could someone give me a list of res colleges that have a basketball court? I went to each college’s site and some had better facilities descriptions than others so the non-mention of a basketball court doesn’t mean they don’t have one. Specifically, does Calhoun have one? I am trying to decide if I should use my parent’s alum status or not.

If you don’t use your legacy status, you will be put randomly into one of the other colleges, so it doesn’t do much good to compare their facilities, unless Calhoun is the only one without a court. I think you will find a lot of advantages to choosing your parent’s college–mainly in making your parent happy, but you will have an even stronger connection to your college than otherwise.

You’re probably better off asking this question on the admitted students’ forum on the Yale website.

Choose Calhoun. Seems to me that a large, large number of people who reject legacy status end up Stiles or Morse. And Calhoun is very good, so it is not worth risk. As for a basketball court, I dunno… their basement is AWESOME though.

My son is a freshman in the college I was in, which made me happy. And, it turns out that the Master is a professor that I had, and who remembered me (positively). This means that she knew who he was from day one, and that has had some benefits. Unless your parent didn’t like Calhoun, I think you won’t be sorry if you choose it.

If you can stomach the name. I’m not all the way in the crowd that says they should change the name but John C. Calhoun was a piece of ****e who thought that slavery was good.

I’m aware that men like Ezra Stiles did own slaves, but Calhoun is of another class entirely, one that I don’t like to see honored at all. His views were evil and they led to the slaughter of the Civil War and then the effective re-enslaving of black Americans under Jim Crow and the sharecropping system (which also locked many whites in poverty). Stiles, by contrast, owned a slave. Whom he freed.

Maybe if they changed the name to Not John C. Calhoun.

We should compile a list of worst residential colleges:

JE, because they cheat in IMs
Saybrook, because they cheat in IMs and are complete a*les about it
TD, because they kind of cheat in IMs, are a*les about it, and generally suck
Stiles and Morse, because they are ugly and isolated
Davenport, because they had Bush back in the 1970s
Pierson, because they are laughably pathetic in IMs, and their cheer sucks
Berkeley, because they suck

See, that really only leaves you Trumbull, Calhoun, Branford, and Silliman as colleges you’d want to be in. Given that, I’d recommend using your legacy status.

(Serious answer - Silliman and a couple other have courts, Calhoun doesn’t, but you probably shouldn’t chance Morse or Stiles if you have legacy elsewhere.)

hahaha. I love IM and plan to play basketball. I hear davenport is everyone’s second favorite college and they do infact have a court. I saw a pic of the sillidome and it looks really nice.

So far the thread says Silliman and Davenport have basketball courts. I can’t confirm this, but I do know that Berkeley has one too (although it’s half sized).

amciw’s list is idiotic.

It’s not true that people who turn down a college are more likely to end up in morse and stiles than any of the other remaining 11.

Calhoun has a good location. The housing is OK, the facilities are a lot better post-renovation, and it’s small so they have to annex a lot of juniors. You’ll be fine either way. Calhoun isn’t my personal favorite college, but there’s something good about every college.

Do you know if JE has a bball court?

it doesn’t matter that much whether your college has the facilities… you can just go to another college and use theirs.

Strong response; commendation are in order for such an insightful interpretation of my list.

Seriously, I was clearly joking, though JE, Saybrook, and TD are the worst IM opponents by miles. Rampant attempts at cheating and general ******ry are the norm for them, especially Saybrook.

Remember that because placement into residential colleges is (mostly) random, the college that has a bunch of cheating IM jerks this year may be entirely different in a couple of years. You hear about how certain colleges have this or that “character,” but it changes over time. The physical facilities are all pretty darn good, and the denizens of each college come to believe–almost immediately–that it is the best. OP, since your parent already *knows *that Calhoun is the best, your choice should be simple.

^ Couldn’t agree more. An example: in my day the Pierson College chant was “Tyng, Tang, GPA” because we always won the intramural and drinking competitions but came in last in GPA rankings. And yet it seems, per one of the posts above, that these days Pierson is “pathetic” in IMs… and a couple of years ago PC ranked highest in GPA.

Each class reinvents the college.

By the way, I didn’t love Pierson (didn’t hate it, either)… and yet my son thought that it was beautiful & great & requested it in his housing form.

He and his classmates will make it their own.
