Bassett sofa

I am looking to buy a new living room sofa and I’d love some advice.

I found one that I like at Bassett (Alex sofa - it’s on sale now) and I love to hear everyone’s experiences with Bassett furniture. It seems like a good company, but is my perception correct?

I googled reviews of Bassett and found many complaints. But then I wonder if this gives me accurate insight or are these just angry people who like to complain. Are they the unhappy 1%. I did not find a forum to read about people’s good experiences with a company or a product. So that would leave a skewed perception if I can only read about complaints.

I want good quality for a low price. I know, I’m really unique. LOL I’d like to spend under $1000 including tax and delivery.

Any advice for me? Thanks in advance!

We have a bassett motion (reclining) sofa and a matching recliner. We got a good buy on them about 6 years ago and have been less than happy with the comfort and wear. In fact, they were replaced fairly quickly and moved to the basement. The pets sleep on them and have worn a spot on the fabric from that alone…so they are obviously not complaining!

The comfort issue we always thought may be due to the recliners because you can actually feel the wood on the couch when you lie on it.

My advice is to pay a little extra for the better quality, if we had it to do over again we would. They looked really nice and we thought we would be happy, but weren’t.

Happy shopping!

Thanks for commenting faithfirst. Not the answer I was hoping for, but I really did want honest feedback.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news…good luck.

We bought two family room sofas 13 years ago from Lazy Boy, of all places, and despite very hard use, they truly look brand new today. The fabric is a nubby chenille and they are very comfortable - my H’s favorite nap place. I bought them in a rush when I moved and didn’t have any sofas at all. I think I paid about $800 apiece and thought I’d use them for a few years and then get something better. It was a great purchase.

I hadn’t thought about Lazy-Boy as a place for sofas. I’ll have to look that store up and see if there is one local to where I live. Thanks for posting.

I looked up a picture of Bassett Alex sofa. Not my cup of tea, but my style preference tends to lean towards modern. Where is it made? Is the frame solid wood or “engineered”? “Engineered wood” plus made in China = not a good buy.

My 2 cents here: do not buy a sofa with two seat cushions if you ever plan on more than 2 people actually sitting on it. The person sitting in the middle always ends up sinking in between the cushions. :)

Interesting point about 2 cushions v 3 cushions. We have a 2 cushion sofa now and that is certainly the case with our sofa. I thought it was just a ‘quirk’ of our sofa, but perhaps it’s just typical of 2 cushion sofas.

The sofa sample the sales person showed us looked like plywood in that it was layers of laminated wood. I don’t know if that would be called engineered wood.

Our house is definitely not modern, so that does limit some options. But I’m OK with that. Let’s just say that my mother-in-law veers towards modern so I naturally lean the other way. :-)

I’m hoping that there are a few more CC folks who’d be willing to share their experiences.
Thanks in advance.

I bought some pieces from the estate collection. Normally I would invest in something a little nicer, but I had some specific requirements that I could not find elsewhere (and I looked for a long time). The estate pieces are so deep and wide that they might just be the most dreamy, delicious couches ever made. This was my goal, and I achieved it. Like goldilocks I kept searching until I found the most comfortable choice. It turned out to be a low-cost Bassett line. For the money, I think the ownership experience has been wonderful.

I did make the mistake of buying a lower quality down fill, so I do get the dreaded feather poke-throughs. I have no idea if a higher end fill was available, but if I had it to do over again I would do that. Still, the feather issue is minor. I live in a house with many rowdy people (residents and guests). This furniture has held up well for our crowd.

Thank you for sharing your experience Spideygirl.
