D24 admitted!

That makes it one rejection, one waitlist, two acceptances. Waiting on five more.

Waitlisted, but feel like a win. Is a reach school.

It was tougher this year with the 10,000 plus apps. Waitlist shows that you had a very strong application, so congrats and hope all works out!

13 percent acceptance for Bates this year (about the same as last year):

has anyone else on the waitlist received a call?

Congrats! I think that’s pretty unusual for Bates. Hope you can attend - I have a kid there. Great college!

From Bates web site:
“Every year is different. The Admission Committee has extended as low as zero to an average of seventeen offers of admission from the waitlist in the last five years. At this time, the Office of Admission cannot estimate how many students will remain active on the waitlist this year. On average, 743 students remained active on the Bates waitlist for each of the last five years.”

If you have Bates questions, feel free to ask! My D is a 2020 grad and her experience got her where she is today. @Shelby_Balik might have more current info.

Yep, my daughter is just finishing her first year and is absolutely happy that she chose Bates!

I didn’t look back five years, but, according to its CDS, Bates admitted 68 students from its waitlist in just the single most recent year.

And in other years, they have admitted zero. Waitlists can vary widely from year to year. Vassar admitted 60 last year and 32 the year before. Bates admitted 68 last year and 0 the year before. It’s six of one, half dozen of the other.

I think you can’t go wrong with the two choices - mine was looking for more of a 50/50 gender split (Bates has). Vassar is 60/40 or 65/35 (somewhere in that range). Boston is more of a hub for Bates vs NYC for Vassar, so that might matter to you (if working in one of those cities is of interest). I also like that Bowdoin/Bates/Colby have a tight network and share a lot of resources and connections (and of course sports rivalries, which can be fun). Vassar has a gorgeous library and I enjoyed walking around the paths through campus. Bates has the lake and the annual frozen puddle jump, which is a very cool tradition. Also, think about looking at the course catalog for your major and see what classes are offered at each school. Good luck with the decision!

The cool thing about Bates that may not have been captured in some of the older posts is how popular it has become in the past 5 years. I feel like that’s a change from decades ago. It jumped ahead of Colby in US News this year, and was covered in Forbes (record applications). It seems to be pulling more kids from the West Coast (we’re in Northern CA and we now send a few kids every year to Bates from my kid’s high school).
