Bates vs Wake Forest

I’m going to study Social Sciences and Humanities.
Possible majors: Political Sciences, History, Econ, Psycho, Sociology.

I prefer small, but Wake is not big either (in fact I got Northeastern and UW, but they’re gonna be too big for me)

Which one would give me better overall quality (e.g. of life, acadamics, place to enjoy life)

I’m from a big city, in the metropolis, but I prefer quieter places to college town. Either is going to be fine for me. I don’t like it densely packed like NYC.

I enjoy sports and outdoor activities and I’m from tropical areas. Bates might be too cold for me, given that it’s more than 30c colder than where I live now.

So what do you guys think? anyone with the same combinations?

This is actually a pretty comparable choice. How comparable?

Winston-Salem is a fairly good-sized city, but Wake is in the suburbs, 5 miles from downtown, so I don’t know that the urban-ness is all that different. The climate in NC is nice throughout the academic year; you have a handle on Maine in the winter. Being one of the smallest Div. I schools in the country with (usually) competitive athletics gives Wake a huge sense of school spirit and a common identity. Athletics will be much lower-key at Bates.

Things to consider:

weather (where are you from? Do you like to ski? Do you own a big down parka? Do you like milder climates?) Bates is gorgeous. But it’s in the middle of nowhere in Maine. Maine gets REALLY cold.

distance from home (would one require you to fly home?)

athletics (if you’re interested in going to basketball/football games, Wake has a HUGE advantage. Bates athletics are like high school sports. If that.)

professor intimacy: if you go to bates, you will know every professor, and they will know you. If that’s important to you, pick Bates.

classmate intimacy: if you go to bates, you will know your ENTIRE class. Depending on the size of your high school, bates may actually be smaller than your high school! That is a huge draw for some students, not so much for others.

where do you want to work after college? You’ll have an easier time finding a job in Boston or New England with the alumni network at Bates; if you want to stay DC or further south, Wake has a great alumni network. If you want to go to any of the big cities including and east of Chicago, either school is fine. As you move west, Bates has less of a brand name (in some cases). As long as your grades are good, you can get a job anywhere with either school. Just more to consider.

Hope that helps!

Thanks,

I am an Asian.
Does anyone know how discrimination goes on Bates and Wake Forest?

Bump… anymore anyone??
