Bathroom remodel - decision paralysis

Our plumber is going to get our fixtures. He recommends delta and we are also going with champagne bronze. No flow restrictions here, we have a well and just replaced the well pump so plenty of water pressure. I don’t want a rain shower head but do want a separate sprayer.

I am spending money on radiant heated floors. A schluter waterproofing membrane (the second most expensive item after the cabinetry). Stock cabinets are costing $4500, it’s double sinks and a linen closet.

The 3 most expensive items, waterproofing, cabinets, shower doors.

Tile is a pittance as far as materials go. I am buying mine at floor and decor because that’s where the contractor wants me to.

As far as tile, ask the contractor what is the largest tile his tiler feels comfortable with. We are going for large tile with minimal grout lines, an envelope floor and a tiled drain.

I bought my mirrors and lights from Amazon as they had the best selection surprisingly. Cabinet pulls were part of the quote for the cabinets.

It’s still an expensive renovation but I’m never going to do this bathroom again. I’ve lived with a horrible bathroom for 17 years!

Everything for our project is picked out, some is ordered. We just need for the call that they are going to start!

We want a walk in shower with glass sides and no shower door. We have a large space where a jacuzzi is being taken out. It should work. The old shower stall “space” will become built in cabinets with a counter and outlet for things like my toothbrush. Cabinets will be large enough for towels and below the counter will be drawers that can house stuff too.

Vanity will be higher and so will the toilet. Radiant heat floors. Vanity mirrors will have LED lights.

Our windows are triple pane and they are 30 plus years old. The one in the bathroom is a double windows and is large. We think we might just get that replaced too.

I redid a powder room - it seems minor, but was so, so happy to get rid of the built in toilet paper holder in the wall and move to a silver, free standing roll holder. It fits all sizes of rolls and I didn’t want to disturb the clean line of the painted wall (dark grey) with something I wanted to de-emphasize anyway!

I also got a cool, sparkly light over the mirror from Amazon - brightens up the dark room and looks really elegant for a small price.

Congrats on the rehabs, @abasket & @deb922!

Thanks for the feedback. @deb922 you are ON TOP of those purchases! While I considered heated floors, to be honest, I’m always hot in the bathroom and set up a fan to run 12 months of the year when I’m in there!

The vanity we are looking at with matching cabinetry to go around our stacked washer/dryer will be in the same line. I don’t think it’s considered custom. We’re doing a floating vanity, 80”, nice drawer space. I wanted either floating or legs - not flat to the ground - just a personal preference!
Our contractor brought his tile guy to the house to see our space and to show the type of tile we are interested in (though not decided fully) and it will be more of a subway tile size. The one thing I’ve always wanted is some beautiful colored tile in a bathroom - this is the one thing I’ve always don’t want to give up!
The shower is one of the most expensive parts of the job. All of it. I’ll have to look at our notes but I think he recommended Kohler or Delta (?).

I don’t need a fancy toilet - just one that is more smooth and easier to clean on the outside. I think H may want to go with a higher toilet.

This is the Delta shower head we are having issues with. We have amazing water pressure in our house/neighborhood. With this shower head I can’t even rinse the soap off without taking it down to get closer to my body. Paid a fortune to be able to use a larger outer head together with a separate handheld and if you try to run them both together you get nothing but drips from the inner head and a flow that’s about as strong as sitting water with the outer head. And the kinetic spray is a joke. It just spits water everywhere.

For that price, you shouldn’t have problems! Should be a quality product, I’ll be sure to ask my plumber about problems. Thanks for the input

This is the fixture I was looking at

The only advice I was given was no black fixtures as we have very hard water. It’s not a good fit with black. My D has them and they are gorgeous!

My D recently did their primary bath. The one thing they splurged on was the vanity. It’s quite the focal point and is beautiful.

2 things my H wanted. Heated floors, we know a couple of bathrooms with them. They aren’t hot, but take the cold off of the floor. And no open shower as he is always cold and wants an enclosed space.

You may know this about water pressure/flow - these are not just determined by being on a well, but also by the shower head, maybe even more so. The high flow/ high pressure heads are sometimes available to swap in for what comes standard; depending on state and codes. We did a couple bathroom renos in the same area. On a well, swapped out the standard shower head before even using because we had experience. Used Tile Craft for wall and floor tile and corian counter. Used Twin bay Glass for shower glass. Unlike many of you we prefer Moen plumbing. All went well.

It may just be a matter of removing a water saving device in the shower head. Basically a rubber washer which won’t allow good water pressure. My plumber says he automatically takes them out most of the time because people think their shower head doesn’t work even though brand new. You can find a ton of DIY videos where the first thing the person does is take out the rubber plug. It does save water because it won’t give you any.

Delta does have excellent life time warranties so save receipts etc.

I’ve probably posted this before, but the 2 things I really like from our MB redo are the 11 inch shower head, with a separate shower head with a longish cord (it makes it easier to clean the shower for one thing), and the comfort height vanity.
We did shower tile to the ceiling, because someone told us that was “better,” maybe to avoid mold issues? (I can’t remember).

We’re just about to finish our MBR reno, just waiting for the vanity to be made and installed. We also redid our guest BR 5 years ago. In both I splurged on the fixtures, Hans Grohe in the guest bath and Newport brass in the master, also splurged on the floor tile but did basic white subway tiles on the walls. I decided not to do heated floors because I like my feet to be cool :woman_shrugging: and splurged on adding an upstairs stackable washer and dryer which are installed and I am loving!
The Newport brass shower head had a choice of flow rates and I chose the highest one possible.
I economized on the sconces that will go on either side of the mirror, I found some at Visual comfort that I liked.

Already tried that and there was no difference

Delta has been good about sending new parts, but they won’t admit this is just a bad design and I’m past the return window as there was an install delay

That’s the brand we have in our kitchen…and it’s what I’ll look for in the bathroom.

We have a nice kitchen/bathroom place near us. I will check with them for the actual fixtures.

My husband isn’t quite on board with this yet…but I’m billing it as a safety Reno. Our current fiberglass shower stall has no grab bars and the floor is getting increasingly more slippery. We need a better shower arrangement.

I know nothing about water flow. Fortunately my husband spent time in his career dealing with it. I’ll pass it on to him about the shower pressure

Delta has lifetime warranties. When it was put in shouldn’t make a difference. No reason you should be beyond a deadline. The return may be beyond from your vendor but Delta will send you a new one or replacement of another type perhaps. Call their customer service directly. Take a short video of what’s happening and send it to them (they may ask.) Have receipt at hand. One last question–where did you buy it from? Delta has approved vendors so warranties don’t necessarily extend to all third party vendors.

Grab bars. Seems like something that two seniors (who me? Yes, H and I) should consider this? Ugh. All I’ve seen in actual homes are not attractive - thoughts???

We have Moen towel bars/ towel ring and a grab bar (grab bar in the shower on about a 45 degree angle) that match our faucets. The shower would probably look better without the grab bar but your eye goes to the beautiful tile accents first I think.

My contractor is going to install a 2x4 where a grab bar would be so that when it comes time that it’s needed, it will be easy to install.

I thought it was a genius idea.

My in-laws had their tub shower redone into a shower only. They had a grab bar installed but only on the back wall. I noticed when I was there last week, there was a suction cup grab bar to get into the shower. Maybe I should tell my husband and see if he can install a permanent bar instead of one that isn’t.

I have removed the flow restrictor in all of our Delta shower heads and they work 100% better. We are not in an area that ever has water shortages. Is it not possible to remove the restrictor in your Delta shower head?

That’s a great idea about the 2x4!

We purchased a fairly expensive bathtub faucet. With the two flow restrictors intact, it took almost a full hour to fill our over-sized bathtub. After removing the restrictors, it takes just 13 minutes to fill the tub.
