Bathroom Remodels

See my problem would by that H would take the open rectangular shower and splash everywhere. Man needs to be contained. I like a hand-held hose and while we’re at it an adjustable shower head (no big attraction to the rainfall).

But since the kids have grown and flown we’re pretty much living in his-and-hers 70s bathrooms in desperate need of updating. The smaller one is pretty easy since the layout is fine. It’s the primary that needs design work. I think it makes sense to contract them both at the same time. Please correct me if I’m wrong. We have another bathroom.

This tile walk-in shower was long enough that all the splashed water stayed in the shower. That’s the key.

Our realtor said there needs to be one bathtub in the house to bathe little children, but that one is enough. I wish she had said we needed two!

We redid our main bath a couple of years ago (was delayed due to Covid). Such a difference!
Way more functional. We had a linen closet that opened out to the hallway outside the bathroom - was really deep and unusable. We split that into two - added a closet that opens into the bathroom and made the one that opened outside much more shallow. We now have so much storage space!!

The vanity replacement is :ok_hand:!!

Very nice! Do you think you would paint or replace the door with a white one?

I think we are strange, because we don’t like the open shower concept, even with clear glass doors. When I’m in a hotel or Airbnb, I just feel too exposed. I need a dark enclosure!

I love my one piece tub. So easy to clean. I am not a fan of cleaning tile. (Understatement). We updated our bathroom a few weeks ago. We kept the tub and toilet; but changed the flooring vanity, medicine cabinet (another must have for me), paint, and added a little storage cabinet where the hamper was.

We love it. The shower curtain always makes me smile. And it was <$5K. And the bath mats are a bit odd because we wanted something, but one of our elderly cats likes to pee on fabric ones. So far so good with this one!

Love the linen closet idea. Also I happen to like the door- adds diverse colors and if in the future you decide change the cabinet colors you can.

I like your farmhouse style sink! My husband always ends up splashing so much water around the sink and down the cabinet under the sink while shaving… that sink of yours would be so easy to maintain clean and neat! :+1::+1:

We just bought a house, and the previous owners had some…how shall I put it? MONSTROUS taste in décor. We inherited this bathroom, but I could use some ideas on how to make it less busy. The semi-dark tiles in the shower stall are claustrophobic. Of course, there’s the yellow accent tiles around the tub that literally clash with everything. Fortunately, they took out the ruffly curtain. And also all the walls AND ceiling are painted a high gloss dark gray.

Inexpensive fixes to consider:
Replace or paint mirror trim a plain neutral color. Simplify the lighting fixture. Roman shade in neutral color. Pop of color on the rugs for focus on the floor. Not too bright but something soothing for a bath.
Edit: can you paint the material behind the mirror on that wall? Lighten it up.

Yikes what a hodgepodge of tiles! Floor tiles on the wall? Why? Look at bathroom photos on the Four Seasons hotel site for some ideas and inspiration - that’s what I’m doing.

We inherited a very functional but very ugly bathroom with this house, too. I’m in the process of getting bids for its refresher. We will keep the layout, toilet, and wall mirrors. Replace all tile and put a large soaker in the place of the jetted tub.

Thanks! Funny that was the worst part of the installation. Farmhouse sinks need a different stopper than normal sinks. And nowhere in our city do they sell one that fits. One small store had one in chrome, but not black. We wound up getting it on Amazon. Couldn’t believe our Lowe’s and Home Depot didn’t have one

If the vanity is otherwise OK, I’d reface the cabinets instead of ripping the entire thing out.

Fortunately, we were able to paint the wooden walls white when we bought the house. It makes a decent accent wall, and now it goes pretty well with the wall color. It’s just that EVERYTHING else clashes.

Amazon was a lifesaver for me when we were replacing light fixtures in this house! Also, that’s where I got the veneering supplies to fix a cabinet that was peeling. And the backflow valve for our sewer pipes that no one but plumbers had in stock! Saved a bunch $$$$ by DIY.

Yeah, I think I’ll do that. The vanity is in pretty good shape, but I might have it painted a high gloss chocolate brown and paint the sides of that hideous mirror.

@BunsenBurner - the door color was one my contractor and I discussed. The rest of the house has that same color wood/trim everywhere - so I chose to leave it as it is for now. At some point, we might decide to switch to white everywhere. H always chimes in “but i like the wood color”.

I like wood, too! If there are other doors throughout the house, it doesn’t make sense to do anything with this door until all are dealt with.

We had super heavy doors everywhere on the second floor. So heavy it was ridiculous. All got replaced at once.

That looks like my neighbor’s bath before they remodeled. They took down the wall between the shower and tub and made an extra large shower, getting rid of the tub. They put some film over the window for privacy.
