I have a student who is extremely interested in Baylor. One of the things that my student (who is not a partier) really likes about Baylor is the perception that there will be a lot to do that does not involve alcohol. Is that a correct assumption? Are alcohol/drugs any less prevalent in the social scene than other schools? Do students feel like they need to have a fake ID to go to bars where everyone hangs out? We know that the school campus is officially dry, but what do students do as a practical matter? My student would be happy doing all kinds of things: attending sporting events, organized school or campus ministry activities, fun outings with friends, etc. We fully realize that you can make your own fun anywhere and my student is not opposed to attending occasional events where people are drinking, but my student is hoping that there will be lots of things going on (events, organized activities, etc.) where alcohol will not be the main focus. Would Baylor be any better than most public flagships if that is what the student is seeking?
My son is just finishing up his 3rd semester at BU. One of the reasons he chose BU was because he didnt want the typical college party scene. He finds plenty to do, certainly sporting events as a freshman, along with a host of other BU activities. He spends a lot of time with St. Peters near campus and that has become a large part of his social circle. Sometimes I wonder if he is having enough fun at college, as he assures me he is…just not the type of fun I was expecting. He doesnt have a fake ID and doesnt feel the need to have one. He says there is definitely a party scene at Baylor, he is just not part of it and he is ok with it. He never seems to be lacking for things to do, especially with his involvement with the church, student government and most importantly…coursework! Our son spends a lot of time eating out with friends on the weekends or just hanging out at various apartments. He has been to a few bars and parties, its just not his thing and he doesnt seem to mind. Freshman year was a little tough because he didnt have a car, but this year is much better and has even done some things around Texas on the weekends. Depending on who your child knows at Baylor, roommate situation freshman year, etc., they will need to invest some time in their social circle, but if they do, they should be just fine. I would say picking the “right” dorm is important as well. From my son’s perspective, some dorms are just more social than others. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
