Baylor Sues Boston University, BU Logo Feud Reignites

Boston University is facing a lawsuit from Baylor University over a logo battle.

The complaint filed in Waco, Texas - where Baylor is located - seeks to prevent Boston University from using an “a specific interlocking BU design that is identical or strikingly similar to Baylor’s federally registered marks.”

Baylor said it has been using the “interlocking BU” since at least 1912 and registered for a trademark in 1987. The lawsuit says Boston University initially opposed the application, but the schools reached an agreement and Boston University has been using the letters side-by-side in its logo.

As they use completely different color schemes, I am not sure why Baylor is making a fuss over this. Many other universities use a similar logo. I’d say that some brand strategist has told them they can get some free publicity to pursue this lawsuit.

It looks like Baylor may have a case, since Boston U. previously agreed not to use the interlocking letter design. The main question is why Boston could not have come up with a more creative/interesting logo in the first place.
