ACT 33, UW GPA 3.9+, 20 dual enrollment credits earned through end of last year
the increase is crazy. this will put most of the middle class family away.
This is very disappointing. We really like Baylor but it wouldnât make any sense going there if it costs more than UT Austin or Texas A&M.
My son was test optimal but similar gpa. 3.8 uw and 4.3 w. 9 AP and dual credit classes and received 50.
Trying to add some historical and current perspective (Fall of 22 admit)âŠmy son is now a sophomore at Baylor and loves it. We expected nothing but they gave him $48k merit over 4 years (no test scores, 3.82 weighted, 12 AP hours). He also earned $7,500 for his study abroad trip this past summer, so there are additional opportunities for assistance.
Baylor is expensive but everyone knows that going in. From my perspective, there is value at BU and many things you cant put a firm price tag on. Line Camp, orientation, Welcome Week, Late Night, free tickets to games, various support services, and an alumni network that seems to look out for their own and list goes on and on.
I would caution anyone to compare Baylor to any medium to large state schoolâŠthey are totally different institutions. Size, cost, student body make up, Greek life, course/major offerings, etcâŠyou just cant compare them. Nationally, Baylor is probably one of a kind. Name another Top 100 national (US News), private/religious, R1 university with top notch athletics and 20,000 total students?
BU was the most expensive school our son applied to, but it ended up being the best fit for himâŠeven coming from the Chicago suburbs.
Questions?
I certainly agree that Baylor is a great school, however they are not T-20 with almost T-20 price tag (Baylor $58,100 vs Rice $62,874). Tuition for UT Austin and Texas A&M are in the 10k+ range. If you have offers from Baylor, UT Austin and Texas A&M, which would you choose? Trust me, I like Baylor a lot, but at that price tag.
Assuming all schools have the same desired majorâŠ
It all comes down to personal fit. BUâŠ15,000 undergrads; UTâŠ42,000+ undergrads; TA&MâŠ60,000+ undergrads. BU requires two religion courses, plus two semesters of chapel. Waco, Austin and College Station all very different. Ranking/ratings better for UT and AMâŠeven better for Rice. Campus life and size all very different as well.
My wife, who works in consulting and has spearheaded recruiting at one Big Ten school, would argue that the highest rated school should be preferred.
For Texas kids, I can see it being a very tough choice/dilemma, especially given the in-state tuition costs and having such great state schools.
yeah I assumed for Texas kids, thatâs why I have a hard time to pay that price tag if I get my first choice major from UT Austin.
They used to have a scholarship calculator so students could see in advance what merit they will likely receive based on test scores and class rank or GPA and AP classes if no class rank was available. This was for the automatic merit not the Getterman Scholars or other program. The top merit when my D20 graduated was $21K a year I think, so we knew in advance what sheâd likely receive and it was what she was offered.
It seems like theyâve increased the merit offered but not at the same rate as tuition, and theyâve removed the calculator because of test optional considerations. It would be nice if they returned the calculator for those who submit test scores to use then say students who donât submit scores are also considered for merit but the calculator isnât applicable, or something like that.
My son also had a 33 ACT and 3.86 but not in the top 6% (outside top 10% actually) so UT is an unlikely option. He also received the $100K with his acceptance Wednesday night. Weâre happy because even though he was offered admission to Mays at TAMU, a smaller school and smaller program may be a much better fit for him; I think he said that Mays has 5000 students alone. He really liked the tour of Baylorâs business school that we took this summer. We also have family connections to Baylor. We knew Baylor was more expensive before applying. My D22 attends a LAC that doesnât even offer merit so the merit really helps.
Best of luck to everyone as you await decisions and make your choices!
My sonâs original dream school was UT Austin, but he didnt even apply since he was out of state and they have such a large in-state enrollment preferenceâŠ95% or so. He loves Austin, but Baylor is definitely a better fit for him. Good luck!
Thank you! We went to Baylor Premier today. Talked to Financial office staff, was told 120k for 4 years is a pretty high offer, if anyone received more, please share. I read somewhere that merit offer can be negotiated, weâll see.
I was told by an admissions counselor in the past month that $30K/year was the top initial merit award this year.
Thatâs how I felt talking to the financial staff, although he didnât say itâs the top tier.
What happens if your child receives the DSD invitation, but the link states that âUnfortunately, all of the events associated with the groups that you have qualified for are all full.â Literally been in email box 2 hours. Do they open more dates?
Hi - was the acceptance for ED or EA? Thank you
DD applied early action Oct 16. Today (Oct 23) admitted with $120k merit. Pre-Health - Pre Med.
Congrats ! If you donât mind me asking, what was her SAT score and GPA.
SAT 1450 (not superscored)
GPA UW 3.94 (2 A-); W 4.42
8 AP, 16 Honors, 4 DE
National Merit commended
She is a legacy (a cousin and me). I have no idea if Baylor gives any preference to that, but she received a separate email yesterday about being a legacy so I thought Iâd mention it.
Those are amazing stats, no wonder she got what seems like the best merit offer so far.
Last year my daughter had those exact same stats (GPA and un-superscored SAT; superscore was 1480) (minus the dual entry credit) and was also National Merit Commended, and she got $76K, as a proof point that things are much different this year. But they sent more than one survey asking why she chose not to attend, and that was pretty much the reason she gave.
Itâs great for you all, and just sucked for us.
