Baylor Universtiy's Relationship with Baylor College of Medicine

Seeking some input from the experts here. I was under the impression (perhaps from this community?) that Baylor University and Baylor College of Medicine had parted ways many years ago and that each institution was independent.

I happened to watch part of the BU football Saturday night and saw their promo commercial that proudly (my term not theirs) showed some medical shots including Dr. Michael DeBakey, the famed heart surgeon who I believe is a professor emeritus of BCM. I was a bit surprised that BU would use that in their promo. Seems a bit disingenuous to imply a relationship that doesn’t exist. I’d also forgotten that Ken Starr, Bill Clinton’s old friend, was now president of BU. --The things one can learn watching football games! Go figure!

Any thoughts on this, perhaps misleading, promo? Made me wonder if this is commonplace for institutional promotion~

Complicated relationship. But here is probably what you saw.

Dr Debakey has passed away in 2008.

He joined the faculty while the two schools were together. He also came up with angioplasty while still part of Baylor University. So I would let BU claim credit.

[Baylor College of Medicine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Baylor College of Medicine - Wikipedia)

" In 1948, Michael E. DeBakey joined the faculty as chair of the Department of Surgery, and the following year, The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences was established. The College’s rise in prominence began in the 1950s when Dr. DeBakey’s innovative surgical techniques garnered international attention. In the 1960s, the college underwent its first major expansion.
In 1969, the College separated from Baylor University and became an independent institution, which allowed it access to federal research funding. The institution’s name changed to Baylor College of Medicine. That same year, the College entered into an agreement with the state legislature to double its class size in order to increase the number of physicians in Texas.[10]"

Here’s another.

Latest gift helps fund scholarships for DeBakey Scholars who carry on legacy of family that “revolutionized the field of medicine”

**Dr. George P. Noon, president of the DeBakey Medical Foundation, and Gale Galloway, a 1952 graduate of Baylor University and DeBakey Medical Foundation trustee, presented the check to the University during a reception at the Baylor Sciences Building, which houses the Medical Humanities and science disciplines at Baylor.

“Dr. Michael E. DeBakey was a great scholar and a great believer in this program that you have here at Baylor University,” Noon said. “I started medical school about 50 years ago and all the information I have gathered over 50 years of on-the-job training, your students will be able to get in four years; so we are very happy and pleased to help fund this program.” **

I know a lot more about the continuing nature of the relationship between the U and the Med School, but I think that should be enough to explain the specific relationship between DeBakey and Baylor University.

http://www2.baylor.edu/baylorproud/2011/02/baylor-university-and-baylor-college-of-medicine-ties-evident-in-newest-bcm-board-appointees/

Interesting. Did not know about the DeBakey Foundation and it’s relationship to/support of BU. I thought the commercial during the game Sat PM, by using shots of DeBakey and other shots related to medicine, implied BCM and BU were one institution which I believed (and now know thanks to research cited) to be inaccurate.

Didn’t realize there was so much ‘gray’ in the relationship between the two. Thanks for enlightening me…guess both are upstanding establishments~

You should have seen the fur flying in 2010 between Rice, Baylor, and BCM. lol That could have been on daytime TV. It just so happens that was my D’s med school application year. I kept up. ;)

I think you were referring to the merger talk between Rice and BCM, as well as between BU and BCM.

Do tell, Curm! DO tell!

The pictures they show of Debakey seem accurate in terms of his age and BU’s association with him.

masslou. It’s kinda like walking a dog on a really long leash. Till the dog finds the end of the leash, he’s in charge. At the end of the leash? Not so much.

Shorthand rendition. BCM was 5 foot down a 6 foot financial hole after extending themselves with a poorly thought out and poor executed hospital building plan. A “white knight” idea was hatched of a merger with well-endowed Rice. The idea was supported by BCM faculty. Baylor U was not pleased. Makes displeasure known. Rice merger talk died. BU BCM talk started. BCM faculty did not support the merger. BU BCM merger talk stopped. Baylor U was pleased.

Speculation: Their position might have been “If you are merging with anybody, you are merging with us.”

Baylor may not have the big numbers but she wields her power in Texas very effectively against all comers based on positions of power held by BU alumni and supporters. Just ask UT . ;)

Very interesting, Curm. Not familiar with the BU/UT reference, either! And I thought you Texans could get along with each other!

There is a mothballed hospital sitting around in Houston with several hundred million sunk into it.

they still havent done anything with it?

Looks like they are getting around to do something.

There is also the Baylor2 Medical Track Program:

"The Baylor2 Medical Track Program is a combined 8-year baccalaureate/MD program for high-achieving students.

Baylor University and Baylor College of Medicine have an agreement that grants six outstanding high school students provisional acceptance to Baylor College of Medicine upon matriculation to Baylor University. One of the six students selected will receive a scholarship valued at $80,000 covering $10,000 per year for four years of undergraduate study at Baylor University and four additional years of medical study at Baylor College of Medicine."

Quoted from BU’s website.

I have known students in the program. They are very, very accomplished.

Has anyone received an invitation to apply for the program? The website states that interviews are given at the end of January, so I think invitations would have to have been sent already or at least very soon. I got admitted to Baylor about a month ago already adn received a scholarship offer, but no invitation to apply for the med program.

Thanks :D

Please check threads in multiple degree programs. I understand they sent a bunch of invites and closed it when they had critical mass of people accepting.

If you were invited, you might have missed it in spam.
