BC? Emory?

Isn’t BC a lot more competitive to get into than is to Emory?

I know US News Rank is a crap but still
How is Emory ranked higher than BC?

not really sure, I have a friend who was deferred from bc but accepted to emory, so it seems strange. Competition isn’t the only factor in the us news ratings though.

It’s just that Boston College gets a lot more applications.

Emory’s ranked higher because it’s a bigger institution that extends its strength to areas other than undergraduate teaching like research.

emory’s in the south… i think theres lots more applicants leaning towards schools in boston/nyc and places like that. again, i think. not too sure.

Emory is well known among people associated with the top colleges in the country, but probably at least 90% of the people in the USA have never even heard of it. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad school, it just means it doesn’t do things that gain a lot of national fame among the masses (especially sports). When it comes to paying $160,000 for a 4-year degree, a lot of people think that after paying that much, it’s not too much to ask that at least most people have HEARD of the school.

On the other hand, BC has become quite famous across the country in the last 30 years because its football, basketball, and hockey teams have become quite prominent. Also, Boston is probably considered to be a better “college town” than Atlanta. So it gets a lot more applicants than Emory, and might be harder to get into, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into it having better professors or offering a better education.

In GENERAL, the colleges with famous sports teams, beautiful campuses,and/or great locations tend to have a better US News “selectivity” rank than their overall rank. Whereas schools that offer great academics but lack famous sports teams, beautiful campuses, and/or great locations tend to have better overall US News scores than their “selectivity” score.

Emory is probably ranked higher because it has a broader range of things you can study/excel in, it’s pretty big on research and outside-of-the-classroom opportunities like that (they have a good study abroad program too) and they’re near some of the world’s biggest firms (coca-cola being one example). plus they have goizueta, a world-famous and nationally ranked business school which is probably how it upped the entire college in ranking.

–Money–

Emory endowment: 4.8 Billion
BC endowment: 1.4 Billion

Emory has a large medical research program and a connection with the CDC, so a lot of money goes through the campus in addition to the resources of the endowment.

–Student Quality–
Emory:
SAT Reasoning Verbal: 640 - 730
SAT Reasoning Math: 660 - 740

BC:
SAT Reasoning Verbal: 610 - 700
SAT Reasoning Math: 640 - 720

–Attracting Top Professors–

Emory pays an average of $105,000 to professors (including ast profs)

lol if you’re choosing between Emory and BC I think the biggest factor should be whether you like Boston or Atlanta! They’re both great places…but neither of them is for everyone…
